Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a high modulus rubber composition having excellent processability and vulcanizate properties, by the graft-copolymerization of an ethylene- propylene rubber with a specific amount of acrylonitrile.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylonitrile is grafted onto an ethylene-propylene rubber to give a graft copolymer containing 5W40 wt.% of acrylonitrile. The ethylene-propylene rubber is, e.g. a binary copolymer consisting of 40W80 parts by weight of ethylene and 60W20 parts by weight of propylene, or a multi-component copolymer consisting of the above binary composition and ≤20 parts by weight of an unsaturated component, e.g. ethylidenenorbornene, etc. The composition has a high green strength, and the vulcanizate has an elongation at break of ≥50%, a 50% modulus of ≥30 kg/cm2 or a 100% modulus of ≥60 kg/cm2, and a breaking tensile strength of ≥150 kg/cm2.
