Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain diphenylamine usable as industrial chemicals for rubber chemicals, medicines, and dyes, in high conversion, by reacting aniline in the liquid phase in the presence of a given amount of water and an insoluble synthetic solid acid catalyst under pressure.
CONSTITUTION: Aniline is reacted in the liquid phase in the presence of 0.02W 5 wt.% of water and a synthetic solid acid catlyst which is substantially inactive at 320W370°C and 13W32 kg/cm2G to give diphenylamine while drawing by- product NH3 out of the system successively. A compound oxide, e.g. TiO2-ZrO2, SiO2-Al2O3, or SiO2-Al2O3-ZrO2, consisting mainly of at least two types selected from silica, alumina, titania, boria, and zirconia may be used as the solid acid catalyst. Water may be directly introduced into the aniline or hydrous aniline containing a given amount of water may be used.
