Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the man-hour and working time as compared with the conventional method, to improve the yield and to reduce the cost, by forming a specially shaped notch in the outer periphery at the splitting position, and by applying force to specified three points for splitting the ingot, in case of splitting the steel ingot or the like.
CONSTITUTION: A notch, with breadth W narrower than 3 mm and depth (d) 5W10 mm, is formed in the outer surface at splitting position of the steel ingot 1, along 1/6 W 1/3 of total length of outer periphery, by the gas frame; two points (a), (b), on both sides of the notch 3 formed in the ingot 1, are supported, and a force is loaded on the point (c) opposite to (or in the same side as) the notch 3, by the hydraulic press, etc.; and then the ingot 1 is split up. According to this method, the yield is 4% improved, the working time is reduced to about 1/60 and the cost is reduced to about 1/10 as compared with the conventional method.
