Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a hexagonal system solid soln. such as (Mo.W)C useful as a heat resistant tool, an impact resistant tool, etc. by heating metallic Mo and W or their cpds. in the presence of Fe, Al and C, and acid-treating the resulting solid soln. to dissolution remove the Fe and Al, followed by reheating.
CONSTITUTION: Metallic molybdenum and tungsten or their cpds. are heated to above 1500°C in the presence of iron, aluminum and carbon, forming a solid soln. This solid soln. is acid-treated to dissolve the iron and aluminum, and reheated to 1180W1600°C in nitrogen or CO to obtain hexagonal system (Mo.W)C, (Mo.W)(CW), (Mo.W)(CNO), etc. Using ferroalloy as starting raw material these cpds. can be produced most cheaply.
