Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as flame retardants of the reaction or addition type for synthetic resins or fibers, in high yield, by brominating bisphenol S dispersed in water solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Bis-phenol S of formula I dispersed in water is brominated with a brominating agent, e.g. Br2 or HBR, to give tetrabromobisphenol S (TBS) of formula II, which is transferred to the organic phase by adding an organic solvent to remove the aqueous phase. An aqueous alkali is added to the organic solvent cont aining TBS to dissolve the resulting TBS salt in the aqueous phase, to which an acid is added to deposit TBS. The TBS thus formed is dried.
EFFECT: The use of separated aqueous phase as an acid reduces the cost in aftertreatment and a high-purity product with a slight discoloration can be obtained. Granulated product is easily handled and valuable.
