Abstract
PURPOSE: To detect accurately a vehicle under no influence of variation in ambient temperature by measuring the time from an ultrasonic transmission wave to its reflected reception wave by temperature-compensated clock pulses, and by discriminating it by a microprocessor.
CONSTITUTION: An ultrasonic signal from ultrasonic-wave generating device 101 is transmitted from transmitter-receiver 105 toward road surface L and a reflected wave from road surface L or vehicle CA is received by transmitter-receiver 105 again to be counted by external counter 110. Microprocessor 120 stores in RAM123 a reference time (updated constantly) of the reflection from road surface L, return time of a sound wave between vehicle-discrimination superior level H and road surface L, and allowable time for the variation of road surface L due to snow S, flickering, etc., and by using those, it is discriminated whether the output of counter 110 is for a reflected wave from road surface L or vehicle CA. Then, since the frequency of pulse generator 111 is varied by temperature detector 112 with ambient temperature, the variation in ultrasonic-wave speed due to the temperature variation is corrected, so that clock pulse for the time measurement will not cause any error detection.
