Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a simple and inexpensive construction and easy assembling of a device for supporting a steering column having an energy absorbing function as a driver protector when a vehicle collides.
CONSTITUTION: When a steering column 5 rotatably supported at steering shafts 2, 3 splined at A is supported, in place, to an automotive body 8 via bearing bracket 6, and bolts 7 or the like, an energy absorbing member 12 provided with deformable posts 12C1 to 12Cn with a plurality of bending portion 12f continued in zigzag at both sides is interposed via a spacer 13 between the bracket 6 and the body 8. When a vehicle collides, driver's breast makes contact with a handwheel 1 to cause the shaft 2 to be engaged with the shaft 3, in which impact force is absorbed by deforming the member 12.
