Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:Substituted tropic acid derivatives of formula I (R1 is o- or m-NO2, mesylamino, amino, OH, aminmethyl which may be protected; R2 is H, alkali or alkaline earth metal, alkylammonium, residue of ester).
EXAMPLE: Methyl m-nirotropate.
USE: A starting material for β-lactam antibiotics.
PREPARATION: The reaction of a substituted phenylacetic acid of formula II with formaldehyde is effected in the presence of an alcoholate or phenolate of formula III (R3 is alkyl, aryl; M is alkali metal) in a solvent as acetone or dioxane at 0W100°C to obtain the compound of formula I.
