Abstract

PURPOSE: To esterification of terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol is conducted in the presence of a titanium compound as a catalyst and the polycondensation is effected after a cobalt compound and an alkali metal compound are added, thereby producing polyester polymers with low diethylene glycol content, good color tone and high transparency.

Then after the completion of esterification, 0.1 W 3 × 10-4mole of a cobalt compound soluble in glycols and 0.2 W 5 × 10-4 mole, per mole of the acid component, of an alkail metal compound are added.
