Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce an empty space between the packed article and packing box and improve cushioning function by elastic deformation before buckling, by cutting a corrugated board laminated-material, and corrugating one or both end faces intersecting the flute axis. CONSTITUTION:A cushioning material 1A is obtained by cutting a corrugated board laminated-material, by corrugating one end face 2 intersecting the flute axis, and by making the other end face 3 flat. The corrugated part of the cushioning material 1A has a shape consisting of a beam 4 and a pillar 5 supporting it, the beam 4 can slightly bend and also the lower part of the pillar 5 is small in ground contact area, therefore, when a vertical load is applied, the pillar 5 itself receives compression more or less and elastically deforms as a whole. Thus, the cushioning material does not exert adverse effect on a packed article, and the paper product can be easily disposed of after use, compared to foam plastic products.

2. Description of the Related Art A laminated material obtained by laminating a large number of cardboards (usually single-sided cardboard) is sometimes used as a cushioning material for packaging. In many cases, it is applied to the four corners or surfaces of the packaged object to fix it in the packaging box and to reduce vibrations and shocks. It is replacing foamed plastic because it is easier to dispose of after use.

However, the corrugated board laminated material has a great directivity as it is and is not so suitable as a cushioning material.
Considering the direction in which a load is applied to a block of corrugated cardboard laminate, the compressive strength of the laminate is low in the direction perpendicular to the laminate surface, although it has a cushioning function. Attempts to address this by selecting the paper quality of the material and increasing the paper thickness would make the laminate expensive and impractical. In the flute axis direction, the compressive strength is large, but when it exceeds the limit, it suddenly undergoes buckling deformation, so the cushioning effect is low. In the third direction, the corrugated cardboard laminate is easily damaged when a load is applied,
not appropriate.

Even in the usage method in which the load is applied in the first direction, the deformation due to the load is likely to be a permanent set even at the beginning, and in the case of long-term transportation, the repeated deformations are piled up to increase the deformation amount. However, there is a problem that the gap between the object to be packaged and the packaging box becomes large and the cushioning action is lost.

As shown in FIG. 1, a corrugated cardboard cushioning material of the present invention is formed by cutting a corrugated cardboard laminated material so that one or both of the end faces intersecting the flute axis are shown. Then, the buffer material (1A) is formed by forming one end surface (2) into an uneven surface. The other end face (3)
Is a plane. This cushioning material is used so that a load is applied in the direction of the flute axis of the corrugated board, that is, in the directions indicated by the up and down arrows in the figure.

Another embodiment is a cushioning material in which two or more end faces each having an uneven surface are stacked and integrated as shown in a practical example described later. Of course, there are two types of the above-mentioned one, one of which has an uneven surface and the other of which has both uneven surfaces.
A cushioning material in which one or more pieces are stacked and integrated is also included in the embodiments of the present invention.

The shape of the concavities and convexities is arbitrary, but typical ones are a sine curve and other waveforms, a sawtooth shape, a semicircle (both inside and outside a circle are possible) and a trapezoid. The sawtooth and the semicircle are continuous. It may be either intermittent or intermittent. Of course, it is possible to combine different uneven shapes.

The above cushioning material can be manufactured by cutting a corrugated cardboard laminated material. The cutting may be carried out by a method of pushing in a blade prepared in a concavo-convex shape, or by using a thread saw. Alternatively, cutting by jetting a fluid jet is also possible.

A preferred manufacturing method is to cut the corrugated cardboard laminate along the uneven surface intersecting the flute axis, and at the same time as or after the cutting, spray an adhesive liquid onto the cut surface to fix the corrugated board cutting end. It consists of Paper dust is generated along with the cutting, which is often harmful to the object to be packaged, so that it is fixed by an adhesive to prevent scattering. As the adhesive, vinyl acetate emulsion or starch paste is easy to use, but any other adhesive can be used.

The block of the corrugated cardboard laminated material having the shape and size shown in FIG. 3A was subjected to a compression test in which a load was applied in the flute axial direction, and the result shown in FIG. 3B was obtained. Of the three curves, the σ-S (stress-strain) diagram, in particular, shows that this block has a poor capacity as a cushioning material.

On the other hand, the cushioning material (1A) of FIG. 1 has a shape including a beam portion (4) and a column portion (5) supporting the beam portion (4), and the beam portion can be slightly bent. At the same time, since the ground contact area at the bottom of the column is small, the column itself receives some compression when a load is applied in the vertical direction, and it has elastic deformability as a whole.

INDUSTRIAL APPLICABILITY The corrugated cardboard cushioning material of the present invention has various properties by properly selecting the paper quality, paper thickness, flute shape, etc. of the corrugated board used as the material, and the lamination thickness and the shape and size of the cut end surface irregularities. By using a combination of shapes, it is possible to have various cushioning properties, so that it can be used not only for the applications in which conventional foamed plastic cushioning materials have been used, but also for other applications. The ease of post-use processing, which is said to be advantageous for paper products over foamed plastic products, comes into play according to the invention.
