In a head peripheral mechanism for a cassette type tape recorder, a magnetic head is attached to a head mounting plate via a head azimuth adjustment mechanism, and a pair of tape guides are fixed to the head mounting plate at both sides of the magnetic head. The tape guide can be introduced into the tape cassette together with the magnetic head through the recording/reproducing head inlet of the tape cassette, and has an inclined surface in contact with the edge of the tape on one of the upper and lower tape width direction movement regulating protrusions.
