Description
The present invention relates to pillows, and in particular to the function of pillows to facilitate breathing for the user.
Easy breathing, even when lying down, is essential for quality sleep. Therefore, pillows are required to have the function of making breathing easier for the user. To make breathing easier, especially when lying on one's back, it is necessary to maintain the head at an appropriate angle. If the head is tilted too far forward (i.e., if the chin is lowered too much), the airway will be compressed, which can make breathing difficult. Conversely, if the head is tilted too far back (i.e., if the chin is raised too much), the base of the tongue will sink into the throat, which can lead to apnea. For example, Patent Document 1 discloses a pillow that supports the neck to the back of the head, reducing the support force at the back of the head to prevent the chin from dropping.
When a person lying on their back inhales, air flows through the trachea toward the lungs. At this time, the muscles at the base of the tongue (glossus muscle) tense up to keep the trachea open. The jaw muscles also work, lifting the lower jaw upward. This widens the trachea and allows for smooth breathing.
During exhalation, air leaves the lungs and is expelled through the trachea. At this time, the tongue muscles relax, but the trachea remains open without narrowing. The jaw muscles also relax, allowing the lower jaw to return to its natural position.
Simply put, breathing causes the jaw muscles in a supine person to contract and expand, helping to keep the trachea properly open.
However, it has been discovered that when the posterior belly of the digastric muscle, which is a jaw muscle, becomes too loose due to aging or other factors, the lower jaw of a person lying on their back drops, causing the hyoid bone to drop, which then compresses the anterior trachea, narrowing it and making it difficult to breathe.
Therefore, the present invention aims to provide a pillow that alleviates the breathlessness and allows for comfortable sleep.
The pillow of the present invention is a pillow with elastic resilience, characterized in that it has a low section that is recessed in a position facing the neck of a person lying on their back so that the elastic resilience of the pillow does not compress the cervical vertebrae of the person lying on their back, a middle section that is higher than the low section and on both sides of the low section supports the left and right sides of the cervical vertebrae of the person lying on their back with the elastic resilience of the pillow, and high sections that are higher than the middle section and on both sides of the middle section press against the posterior belly of the digastric muscle of the person lying on their back with the elastic resilience of the pillow, and the pressing ends of the left and right high sections are formed on the outside of the cervical vertebrae of the person lying on their back and are configured to press against the posterior belly of the digastric muscle.
The width of the cervical vertebrae of a supine person varies from person to person. For Japanese men, the first cervical vertebra is generally about 7 cm, and the second and subsequent cervical vertebrae are generally about 6 cm. For Japanese women, the first cervical vertebra is generally about 6.5 cm, and the second and subsequent cervical vertebrae are generally about 5.5 cm. In the present invention, "pressing the posterior belly of the digastric muscle" means pressing the posterior belly of the digastric muscle without pressing the cervical vertebrae of the supine person (see FIG. 3). This is because pressing the cervical vertebrae of a supine person results in little or no pressure on the posterior belly of the digastric muscle, and thus fails to improve the sagging jaw of a supine person. For this reason, in the present invention, the end portion for pressing the posterior belly of the digastric muscle at a high position is formed on the outside of the cervical vertebrae of a supine person to press the posterior belly of the digastric muscle. However, pressing the posterior belly of the digastric muscle does not necessarily mean pressing the posterior belly of the digastric muscle directly, but may also mean pressing indirectly via a muscle located higher (closer) than the posterior belly of the digastric muscle. For example, the sternocleidomastoid muscle, which attaches to the mastoid process of the temporal bone, is located higher (closer) than the posterior belly of the digastric muscle, and the posterior belly of the digastric muscle can also be pressed by pressing the sternocleidomastoid muscle on the side that attaches to the mastoid process of the temporal bone.
The pillow of the present invention has elevated portions that press against the posterior belly of the digastric muscle (PDM) of a person lying on their back with the pillow's elastic repulsive force, and the left and right elevated portions are configured so that their pressing ends are formed on the outside of the person's cervical vertebrae and press against the posterior belly of the digastric muscle (PDM). This effectively prevents the posterior belly of the digastric muscle from relaxing too much, thereby preventing the lower jaw from dropping and the hyoid bone from dropping, which could narrow the trachea. This keeps the trachea open, thereby improving breathlessness. It also has the advantage of preventing the mouth from opening, further preventing snoring and apnea.
In addition, by providing a recessed low section to prevent pressure on the cervical vertebrae of a person lying on their back, the risk of cervical hernia or cervical spondylosis can be reduced.
Furthermore, by providing a middle section that supports both sides of the cervical vertebrae of a person lying on their back with the pillow's elastic resilience, the risk of neck stiffness can be avoided. In other words, if the area around the cervical vertebrae is not supported at all, the neck will become stiff, which will lead to fatigue and shallow breathing, causing shortness of breath, but by providing the middle section, this can be prevented.
In this way, the pillow of the present invention can improve breathlessness, relieve neck stiffness, and reduce the risk of developing cervical hernia or cervical spondylosis, allowing for comfortable sleep.

In addition, the pillow 1 has a bilaterally symmetrical structure, as shown in FIG.
The pillow 1 is composed of a rear base 2, a front lower base 3, a front upper base 4, a pair of left and right high-level forming bodies 5, a pair of left and right side regulating portion forming bodies 6, and a main regulating portion forming body 7.
The rear base 2 is made of a rectangular plate of elastic urethane foam having the same outline as the pillow 1 when viewed from the front side.
The front-lower base 3 is a rectangular plate that covers the lower front side of the rear base 2 (below the center of the front side). It is made of elastic urethane foam that is thicker (higher) than the rear base 2 and has a notch 31 for forming a lower part, which will be described later. The front-lower base 3 is glued and fixed in place on the lower front side of the rear base 2. The left and right center of the front-lower base 3 is located below the center of the pillow 1, and the upper part of the left and right center of the front side of the front-lower base 3 corresponds to the area SA between the superior nuchal line SA4 and the inferior nuchal line SA5 of the occipital bone SA of a person lying on their back. 2, and the lower part of the left-right central part on the front side of the front-lower base 3 faces the neck NC from the first cervical vertebra C1 to the fourth cervical vertebra C4 of a person lying on their back, and further, of the lower part of the left-right central part on the front side of the front-lower base 3, the left-right central part faces the first cervical vertebra C1 to the fourth cervical vertebra C4 of a person lying on their back, and the left and right side parts face the posterior belly of the digastric muscle PDM of a person lying on their back, and further, the parts between the left-right central part and the left and right side parts face the left and right side parts of the first cervical vertebra C1 to the fourth cervical vertebra C4 of a person lying on their back.
The front-lower base 3 has a notch 31 for forming a low portion, which is formed by removing the left-right central portion of the lower portion of the front-lower base 3, facing the first cervical vertebra C1 to the fourth cervical vertebra C4, i.e., the left-right central portion of the front side of the front-lower base 3. This creates a recessed low portion 8 in the area facing the neck NC of a person lying on their back, so that the elastic repulsive force of the pillow 1 does not compress the cervical vertebrae C1 to C4 of the person lying on their back. The front of the rear base 2 is exposed at this low portion 8.
The pair of left and right elevated portion forming bodies 5 are made of rectangular plates of elastic urethane foam that are thinner (lower) than the front lower base 3 and cover the left and right sides of the lower portion of the front side of the front lower base 3, i.e., the portion of the front lower base 3 that faces the posterior belly of the digastric muscle PDM of a person lying on their back, i.e., the left and right sides of the lower portion in the center of the left and right parts of the front side of the front lower base 3.
The front-lower base 3 has a pair of left and right high-portion forming bodies 5 glued and fixed in an overlapping state to the left and right sides of the lower part of the front side central part of the front side of the front-lower base 3, in the area facing the posterior belly of the digastric muscle PDM of a person lying on their back, so that high portions 9 are provided in the area facing the neck NC of a person lying on their back, which are higher than the middle portion 10 described below and press the posterior belly of the digastric muscle PDM of a person lying on their back on both the left and right sides of the middle portion 10 with the elastic repulsive force of the pillow 1.
Here, the high portion 9 is provided so that the corner formed by the step between the end of the high portion 9 and the middle portion 10 faces the posterior belly of the digastric muscle PDM of a person lying on their back. This allows the high portion 9 to directly or indirectly press against the posterior belly of the digastric muscle PDM of a person lying on their back with the corner formed by the step between the end of the high portion 9 and the middle portion 10. Although not shown, a pressing protrusion may be provided on the upper surface of the end of the high portion 9, and this protrusion may directly or indirectly press against the posterior belly of the digastric muscle PDM of a person lying on their back.
The front-lower base 3 is provided with a low-portion forming notch 31 and a pair of left and right high-portion forming bodies 5. This provides a middle portion 10 that is higher than the low portion 8 and supports the left and right sides of the cervical vertebrae C1 to C4 of a person lying on their back on the part of the front-lower base 3 that faces the left and right sides of the first to fourth cervical vertebrae C1 to C4 of the person lying on their back, i.e., the part between the left and right central portion (low portion 8) and the left and right sides (high portion 9) of the lower part of the front-side left and right central portion of the front-lower base 3, facing the neck NC of the person lying on their back. The middle portion 10 is higher than the low portion 8 and supports the left and right sides of the cervical vertebrae C1 to C4 of a person lying on their back on both sides of the low portion 8 with the elastic resilience of the pillow 1.
The front-lower base 3 has a main support section 11 made of elastic urethane foam located above the height direction of the elevated section 9 (in the X1 direction in the figure) in the area facing the area SA2 between the superior nape SA4 and inferior nape SA5 of the occipital bone SA of a person lying on their back, i.e., the upper section in the center of the front left and right sides of the front of the base 3. The main support section 11 applies pressure to at least the left and right designated areas SA7 of the area SA2 between the superior nape SA4 and inferior nape SA5 of the occipital bone SA of a person lying on their back, providing planar support. A middle section 10 is located at the same height as the main support section 11.
The pair of left and right lateral regulating portion forming bodies 6 are rectangular plates that cover the left and right sides of the front side of the front lower base 3, which are located on the left and right outer sides of the main support portion 11 and the elevated portion 9, and are made of elastic urethane foam that is thicker (higher) than the elevated portion forming bodies 5.
The front upper base 4 has a pair of left and right lateral restriction member forming bodies 6 glued and fixed in an overlapping state to the left and right sides of the front side of the front lower base 3, which is located on the left and right outer sides of the main support part 11 and the elevated part 9, so that the lateral restriction members 13 protrude higher than the main support part 11 on the left and right outer sides of the mastoid process SC1 of the temporal bone SC of a person lying on their back, thereby providing lateral restriction members 13 that restrict the head HD of a person lying on their back from turning over (the rotation of only the neck NC to the head HD in the left and right lateral directions).
The front upper base 4 is a rectangular plate that covers the upper front side of the rear base 2 that is not covered by the front lower base 3, and is made of elastic urethane foam of the same thickness (height) as the rear base 2, with a notch 41 for forming the secondary support portion, which will be described later. The front upper base 4 is glued and fixed in place on the upper front side of the rear base 2 that is not covered by the front lower base 3, and the lower part of the left and right central part of the front side of the front upper base 4 is positioned in the center of the pillow 1, and the lower part of the left and right central part of the front side of the front upper base 4 is configured to face the head closer to the vertex than the upper nape SA4 of a person lying on their back.
The front upper base 4 has a notch 41 for forming a secondary support portion that is cut out in the portion of the front upper base 4 that faces the head of a person lying on their back on the side of the crown of the head of the person lying on their back, i.e., the lower portion in the center of the front left and right sides of the front side of the front upper base 4.This allows the secondary support portion 12 to be provided on the upper side X1 in the height direction of the main support portion 11, made of elastic urethane foam, with a support height set lower than that of the main support portion 11, and that applies pressure to support the head of the person lying on their back on the side of the crown of ... neck line SA4.
The main regulating section forming body 7 is a rectangular plate that covers the upper front side of the front upper base 4 and is made of elastic urethane foam of the same thickness (height) as the front upper base 4, with a main regulating section forming notch 71 (described below) formed in it.This main regulating section forming body 7 is glued and fixed in place on the upper front side of the front upper base 4, and the lower part of the left-right center of this main regulating section forming body 7 is configured to face the secondary support section forming notch 41, i.e., the secondary support section 12.
The front upper base 4 has the main regulating section forming body 7 glued and fixed to the upper front side of the front upper base 4 in a superimposed state, and a main regulating section forming notch 71 is provided by cutting out the portion of the main regulating section forming body 7 facing the auxiliary support section 12, i.e., the lower portion in the center of the left and right parts of the main regulating section forming body 7.This creates a main regulating section 14 that is located on the opposite side of the auxiliary support section 12 from the main support section 11 and protrudes higher than the auxiliary support section 12, and regulates the upward movement of the head in the height direction of a person lying on their back.
Next, the effects of the technical features of the pillow 1 will be described.
[Regarding technical features (1A) to (1D)]
The pillow 1 has elevated portions 9 that press the posterior belly of the digastric muscle PDM of a person lying on their back with the pillow's elastic repulsive force. The left and right elevated portions 9 are configured so that their pressing ends (corners or protrusions in the above-described embodiment) are formed on the outside of the cervical vertebrae C1 to C4 of the person lying on their back and press the posterior belly of the digastric muscle PDM. This effectively prevents the posterior belly of the digastric muscle PDM from loosening too much, thereby preventing the lower jaw from dropping and the hyoid bone HB from dropping, which could narrow the trachea. This keeps the trachea open, improving breathlessness. It also prevents the mouth from opening, further preventing snoring and apnea.
In addition, by providing a recessed low portion 8 so as not to compress the cervical vertebrae (the first cervical vertebra C1 to the fourth cervical vertebra C4 in this embodiment) of a person lying on their back, the risk of cervical hernia or cervical spondylosis can be reduced.
Furthermore, by providing the middle part 10 that supports both the left and right sides of the cervical vertebrae of a person lying on their back with the elastic repulsive force of the pillow, the risk of the neck NC becoming stiff can be avoided. In other words, if the area around the cervical vertebrae is not supported at all, the neck NC will become stiff, and stiffness in the neck NC will cause fatigue to accumulate and shallow breathing, which can lead to shortness of breath, but by providing the middle part 10, this can be prevented.
In this way, the pillow 1 according to this embodiment can improve breathlessness, relieve neck stiffness, and reduce the risk of developing cervical hernia or cervical spondylosis, allowing for comfortable sleep.
[Regarding technical features (2A) to (2B)]
The pillow 1 has the following features: the support height of the sub-support part 12 is set lower than that of the main support part 11; the main support part 11, which has a higher support height, applies pressure to predetermined areas SA7 on the left and right of the occipital bone SA, which faces diagonally downward, to provide planar support; and these predetermined areas SA7 on the left and right that provide planar support are close to the position of the center of gravity G of the head; therefore, the weight of the head is concentrated on the main support part 11. This concentration prevents the head HD of a person lying on their back from easily starting to move in the vertical direction of the pillow 1, effectively suppressing this from developing into a large shift, and the angle of the head HD of a person lying on their back can be more stably maintained. In other words, it is possible to effectively prevent the angle of the head HD of a person lying on their back from easily tilting significantly, which was previously considered difficult.
Furthermore, since the areas that are supported by applying pressure in a planar manner with the main support part 11 are the left and right specified areas SA7 of the occipital bone SA, there is no pressure stress and no adverse effect on breathing. In addition, the weight of the head HD of a person lying on their back is concentrated on the main support part 11, causing the main support part 11 to become depressed, which makes it less likely for the head HD of a person lying on their back to roll over (when only the neck NC to the head HD of a person lying on their back rotates laterally to the left and right), and also makes it less likely for a stiff neck to occur.
