Description
消偏性=カラーフィルタ(CN)−偏光板(CN)×[カラーフィルタ(PN)/偏光板(PN)](ここで、「カラーフィルタ(CN)」はカラーフィルタ基板を挟持する一対の偏光板をクロスニコル(CN)に配置した場合の輝度であり、「カラーフィルタ(PN)」はカラーフィルタ基板を挟持する一対の偏光板をパラニコル(PN)に配置した場合の輝度である。また、偏光板(CN)は、クロスニコル(CN)に配置した一対の偏光板のみの輝度であり、偏光板(PN)は、パラニコル(PN)に配置した一対の偏光板のみの輝度である。)、
上記消偏性をパラニコルに配置した一対の偏光板の輝度を500cd/m2としたときの値に換算した、白輝度換算消偏性が0.05cd/m2以下である。

図10(a)〜(c)および表2にシミュレーションに用いたLCDの構成を示す。図10(a)〜(c)は、シミュレーションに用いたLCDの画素部の構成を模式的に示す平面図である。図10(a)は37型WXGA型液晶テレビ用のLCDの画素部を想定したもの(参考例)であり、図10(b)および(c)はそれに本発明を適用したもの(実施例)である。画素の水平方向のピッチは200μm、垂直方向のピッチは600μmである。ここでも図1〜図3と共通する構成要素は同じ参照符号で示し、説明を省略する。

Claims (6)
- それぞれが、第1電極と、前記第1電極に対向する第2電極と、前記第1電極と前記第2電極の間に設けられた垂直配向型の液晶層とを有する複数の画素を備え、
前記第1電極を有する第1基板、前記第2電極を有する第2基板、およびクロスニコルに配置された一対の偏光板をさらに備え、
前記複数の画素のそれぞれは、
前記液晶層の前記第1電極上に設けられた帯状のリブと、
前記液晶層の前記第2電極に形成された帯状のスリットと、
を有し、前記液晶層に電圧を印加したときに、前記リブと前記スリットとの間の領域の液晶分子が傾斜する方位が前記リブおよび前記スリットの延びる方位に直交する液晶ドメインが形成され、
前記リブは、それが延びる方位に直交する断面におけるテーパー角が18°以下の側面を有し、且つ、前記リブの高さに相当する厚さの膜のOD値が0.8以上の材料で形成されており、
前記リブは、互いに略90°異なる方位に延びる第1部分と第2部分とを有し、前記第1部分および第2部分はそれぞれが前記一対の偏光板の透過軸がなす角を二等分し、
前記第2基板は、前記複数の画素のそれぞれに対応する領域内に金属を含む材料で形成された配線を有し、
前記配線は、前記液晶層の法線方向から見たときに、前記リブと重なるように配置されている、液晶表示装置。 - 前記リブの材料の比誘電率εは液晶材料の平均比誘電率εavよりも小さい、請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記リブは青色顔料と赤色顔料とを含む、請求項1または2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記配線の幅は前記リブの幅よりも狭い、請求項1から3のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第2電極に接続されたTFTと、補助容量とを有し、
前記配線は前記TFTのドレインまたは前記補助容量を形成する一対の電極の一方に接続されている、請求項1から4のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。 - カラーフィルタをさらに備え、
前記カラーフィルタの消偏性は、下記式で与えられ、
消偏性=カラーフィルタ(CN)−偏光板(CN)×[カラーフィルタ(PN)/偏光板(PN)](ここで、「カラーフィルタ(CN)」はカラーフィルタ基板を挟持する一対の偏光板をクロスニコル(CN)に配置した場合の輝度であり、「カラーフィルタ(PN)」はカラーフィルタ基板を挟持する一対の偏光板をパラニコル(PN)に配置した場合の輝度である。また、偏光板(CN)は、クロスニコル(CN)に配置した一対の偏光板のみの輝度であり、偏光板(PN)は、パラニコル(PN)に配置した一対の偏光板のみの輝度である。)、
上記消偏性をパラニコルに配置した一対の偏光板の輝度を500cd/m2としたときの値に換算した、白輝度換算消偏性が0.05cd/m2以下である、請求項1から5のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
