Description
前記配向膜と位相差制御層との界面に存在する液晶分子の基材に対する角度が、実質的に0度であることを特徴とするものである。
前記配向膜上に液晶材料を設け、その液晶材料に配向規制力を与えて、位相差制御層を形成する工程と、を少なくとも含んでなり、
前記液晶材料に配向規制力を与える手段が、平行化された偏向光を前記配向膜に対して鉛直方向から照射する光配向法により行われる、ことを特徴とするものである。
図1(a)に示すように、配向膜12を形成する基材11としては、ガラス、石英等のガラス基板やシリコン等の無機基材か、有機基材からなる。
本発明に使用される配向膜は、以下のような方法によって形成できる。配向膜材料を溶剤に溶解した溶液を調製し、基材11上にスピンコート法、フレキソ印刷法等により塗布して塗布膜を形成した後、この塗布膜の溶剤を除去し、未配向の配向膜を形成する。次に、配向膜を配向させる。本発明においては、液晶分子のプレチルト角度を実質的に0°とさせる配向方法として、光配向法、およびラビング方向に対して垂直方向に配列するラビング手法が挙げられる。
配向膜12上に形成する位相差制御層14として、本発明においては液晶材料を使用する。液晶材料は配向処理後にその配列を保持したまま、固定化する必要がある。図1(c)は、位相差制御層14の液晶分子15をプレチルト角度が実質的に0°の状態で配列させた状態を示す。図中、液晶分子15を模式的に拡大して示してある。
基材として、所定の方法により洗浄処理を施したガラス基板(1737材、コーニング社製)を用い、配向膜材料としてAL1254(JSR社製)を用いた。このガラス基板上に配向膜材料をフレキソ印刷により塗布し、600Åの厚さの配向膜を形成した。
位相差制御層形成用の液晶材料として、紫外線硬化型である、アクリレート基を有するRMM34(メルク社製)を用いた。溶剤としてプロピレングリコールモノメチルエーテルアセテートに20重量部のRMM34を溶解し、位相差制御層形成用組成物とした。
次に、調製した位相差制御層形成用組成物を、光配向法により配向膜を形成した上記の基材上に、スピンコーティング法を用いて塗布した。比較のため、ラビング法による配向膜を形成した基材上にも、同一の組成物を塗布した。
次に、上記のそれぞれの位相差制御部材を、観察角度(煽り角度)を遅相軸方向で−45°から+45°の範囲で変化させつつ、位相差量を示すリタデーション値(Re;単位nm)を測定した。測定には、RETS−3100VA(大塚電子社製)を用いた。測定結果を図4、図5に示す。

Claims (6)
- 基材上に、配向膜を介して固定化された液晶材料からなる位相差制御層を有する位相差制御部材を製造する方法であって、
基材上に配向膜を形成する工程と、
前記配向膜上に液晶材料を設け、その液晶材料に配向規制力を与えて、位相差制御層を形成する工程と、を少なくとも含んでなり、
前記液晶材料に配向規制力を与える手段が、平行化された偏光光を前記配向膜に対して鉛直方向から照射する光配向法により行われることを特徴とする、位相差制御部材の製造方法。 - 前記配向膜と位相差制御層との界面に存在する液晶分子の基材に対する角度が、実質的に0度である、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記位相差制御層が正の複屈折特性を有し、かつその光学軸が位相差制御層平面に対して平行である、請求項2に記載の方法。
- 前記位相差制御層が、第1位相差制御層と第2位相差制御層とがこの順で積層されたものであり、前記第1位相差制御層が正の複屈折特性を有し、かつその光学軸が第1位相差制御層の平面に対して平行であり、前記第2位相差制御層が負の複屈折特性を有し、かつその光学軸が第2位相差制御層の平面に対して垂直である、請求項2に記載の方法。
- 前記位相差制御層が、第1位相差制御層と第2位相差制御層とがこの順で積層されたものであり、前記第1位相差制御層が正の複屈折特性を有し、かつその光学軸が第1位相差制御層の平面に対して平行であり、前記第2位相差制御層が正の複屈折特性を有し、かつその光学軸が第2位相差制御層の平面に対して垂直である、請求項2に記載の方法。
- 前記位相差制御層が、紫外線により硬化可能な液晶材料からなる、請求項1〜5のいずれか一項に記載の方法。
