図1を参照すると、1は機関本体、2は各気筒の燃焼室、3は各燃焼室2内に夫々燃料を噴射するための電子制御式燃料噴射弁、4は吸気マニホルド、5は排気マニホルドを夫々示す。吸気マニホルド4は吸気ダクト6を介して排気ターボチャージャ7のコンプレッサ7aの出口に連結され、コンプレッサ7aの入口はエアクリーナ8に連結される。吸気ダクト6内にはステップモータにより駆動されるスロットル弁9が配置され、更に吸気ダクト6周りには吸気ダクト6内を流れる吸入空気を冷却するための冷却装置10が配置される。図1に示される実施例では機関冷却水が冷却装置10内に導かれ、機関冷却水によって吸入空気が冷却される。
この実施例では、主SOXトラップ触媒11に捕獲されたSOX量を推定し、主SOXトラップ触媒11に捕獲されたSOX量が予め定められた量を越えたときにSOXトラップ率が予め定められた率よりも低下したと判断され、このときSOXトラップ率を回復するために排気ガスの空燃比がリーンのもとで主SOXトラップ触媒11の温度を上昇させる昇温制御を行うようにしている。
図6を参照するとまず初めにステップ60において図4(A)に示すマップからNOX吸蔵触媒15に単位時間当り吸蔵されるNOX量NOXAが算出される。次いでステップ61ではこのNOXAがNOX吸蔵触媒15に吸蔵されているNOX量ΣNOXに加算される。次いでステップ62では吸蔵NOX量ΣNOXが許容値NXを越えたか否かが判別され、ΣNOX>NXとなったときにはステップ63に進んで還元剤供給弁21から供給された還元剤によってNOX吸蔵触媒15に流入する排気ガスの空燃比を一時的にリーンからリッチに切換えるリッチ処理が行われ、ΣNOXがクリアされる。

- 機関排気通路内に排気ガス中に含まれるSOXを捕獲しうる主SOXトラップ触媒を配置し、該主SOXトラップ触媒下流の排気通路を主排気通路と主排気通路を迂回するバイパス通路とに分岐し、該主排気通路内に、流入する排気ガスの空燃比がリーンのときには排気ガス中に含まれるNOXを吸蔵し流入する排気ガスの空燃比が理論空燃比又はリッチになると吸蔵したNOXを放出するNOX吸蔵触媒を配置すると共に該NOX吸蔵触媒上流の主排気通路内に補助SOXトラップ触媒を配置し、通常は排気ガスが主排気通路内を流通せしめられ、主SOXトラップ触媒を再生すべきときには排気ガスがバイパス通路内を流通せしめられる内燃機関の排気浄化装置。
- 補助SOXトラップ触媒は主SOXトラップ触媒に比べてSOXの保持力が高くされている請求項1に記載の内燃機関の排気浄化装置。
- 補助SOXトラップ触媒は基体上に形成されたコート層と、コート層上に維持された貴金属触媒からなり、コート層内にはアルカリ金属、アルカリ土類金属又は希土類金属が分散して含有されている請求項1に記載の内燃機関の排気浄化装置。
- 上記主SOXトラップ触媒は、排気ガスの空燃比がリーンのもとで主SOXトラップ触媒の温度が上昇すると捕獲したSOXが次第に主NOXトラップ触媒の内部に拡散していく性質を有すると共に主SOXトラップ触媒に流入する排気ガスの空燃比がリッチになると主SOXトラップ触媒の温度がSOX放出温度以上であれば捕獲したSOXを放出する性質を有し、主SOXトラップ触媒によるSOXトラップ率が予め定められた率よりも低下したときに主トラップ触媒の再生作用が行われる請求項1に記載の内燃機関の排気浄化装置。
- 主トラップ触媒を再生すべきときには主SOXトラップ触媒に流入する排気ガスの空燃比をリッチにさせることなくリーンに維持した状態で主SOXトラップ触媒の温度を上昇させる請求項4に記載の内燃機関の排気浄化装置。
- 主トラップ触媒を再生すべきときには主SOXトラップ触媒に流入する排気ガスの空燃比をリッチにする請求項4に記載の内燃機関の排気浄化装置。
- 主SOXトラップ触媒が直列に配置されたSOXトラップ触媒とパティキュレートフィルタからなる請求項1に記載の内燃機関の排気浄化装置。
- 主SOXトラップ触媒がNOX吸蔵触媒からなる請求項1に記載の内燃機関の排気浄化装置。
