Description
光導波路型変調器の多くは、マッハツェンダー型光導波路が利用され、特に、基板に印加する電界に対し最も効率的に電気光学効果が発現する方向が基板の厚さ方向(光導波路を形成した基板面に垂直な方向)である、所謂、Zカット型基板を用いる場合には、マッハツェンダー型光導波路の分岐導波路に沿って(導波路の上又はバッファ層を挟んで導波路の上に)信号電極や接地電極が配置されている。
図1及び図2に、本発明の光導波路型変調器に関する第1の実施例を示す。図2は、図1の右側のY分岐部を中心とした拡大図であり、説明を分かり易くするため、バッファ層や接地電極3は省略されている。
電気光学効果を有するZカット型基板1と、該基板上に形成されたマッハツェンダー型光導波路部分を有する光導波路(5〜10)と、該光導波路内を導波する光波を変調するための変調用電極とを有する光導波路型変調器において、該マッハツェンダー型光導波路部分は2つの分岐導波路7,8と2つのY分岐部6,9を有し、該変調用電極は信号電極2と接地電極3,4とから構成され、該信号電極2は、少なくとも一方の分岐導波路7に沿って配置されると共に、該信号電極が前記一方の分岐導波路から離れマッハツェンダー型光導波路部分の対称軸dを跨いで該信号電極を取り出す領域では、前記一方の分岐導波路に繋がるY分岐部の一部に沿って該信号電極を配置し、さらに、該信号電極が前記一方の分岐導波路から離れマッハツェンダー型光導波路部分の対称軸を跨がずに該信号電極を取り出す領域では、前記一方の分岐導波路に繋がるY分岐部に沿わずに該信号電極を配置することを特徴とする。
信号電極や接地電極などの変調用電極は、Ti・Auの電極パターンの形成及び金メッキ方法などにより形成することが可能である。
第2の実施例では、各分岐導波路7,8に対応して個々独立の信号電極21,22を配置した、所謂、デュアル式光変調器の例を示している。

Claims (5)
- 電気光学効果を有するZカット型基板と、
該基板上に形成されたマッハツェンダー型光導波路部分を有する光導波路と、
該光導波路内を導波する光波を変調するための変調用電極とを有する光導波路型変調器において、
該マッハツェンダー型光導波路部分は、2つの平行かつ直線形状を有する分岐導波路と、該分岐導波路と接続される接続点から光導波路の分岐点までを含む2つのY分岐部とを有し、
該変調用電極は信号電極と接地電極とから構成され、
該信号電極は、少なくとも一方の分岐導波路の上側に沿って配置されると共に、該信号電極が前記一方の分岐導波路から離れマッハツェンダー型光導波路部分の該分岐導波路と平行な対称軸を跨いで該信号電極を取り出す構成を有し、前記一方の分岐導波路に繋がるY分岐部の該接続点から該分岐点までの間の一部で光導波路の上側に沿って該信号電極を配置し、
該信号電極と該Y分岐部とが離れる地点でのY分岐部を構成する2つの導波路の該対称軸に垂直方向の間隔は、15μm以上であることを特徴とする光導波路型変調器。 - 請求項1に記載の光導波路型変調器において、前記2つの分岐導波路の上側に沿って配置される2つの信号電極を有し、一方の信号電極が一方の分岐導波路から離れマッハツェンダー型光導波路部分の該対称軸を跨いで前記一方の信号電極を取り出す構成を有し、前記一方の分岐導波路に繋がるY分岐部の該接続点から該分岐点までの間の一部で光導波路の上側に沿って該信号電極を配置し、他方の信号電極は他方の分岐導波路に繋がる同一のY分岐部に沿わずに配置されることを特徴とする光導波路型変調器。
- 請求項2に記載の光導波路型変調器において、前記2つの信号電極の少なくとも一方には、変調信号を遅延調整するための湾曲部が形成されていることを特徴とする光導波路型変調器。
- 請求項2又は3に記載の光導波路型変調器において、前記2つの信号電極は、共に同じ全長を有することを特徴とする光導波路型変調器。
- 請求項1に記載の光導波路型変調器において、前記2つの分岐導波路の一方に信号電極を、他方に接地電極を配置すると共に、該信号電極が前記一方の分岐導波路から離れマッハツェンダー型光導波路部分の対称軸を跨いで該信号電極を取り出す構成を有し、前記一方の分岐導波路に繋がるY分岐部の該接続点から該分岐点までの間の一部で光導波路の上側に沿って該信号電極を配置し、前記他方の分岐導波路に繋がる同一のY分岐部の該接続点から該分岐点までの間の一部で光導波路の上側に沿って該接地電極を配置することを特徴とする光導波路型変調器。
