Description
具体的には、マイクロカプセルを塗布する際に、マイクロカプセルの塗布領域や配置を精密に制御することが難しかった。すなわち、従来は、ローラやスキージを用いる機械的な方法を利用して、流動性のあるマイクロカプセルの集合体を基板全体に押し広げていたが、本来、表示領域の外側にはマイクロカプセルを配置する必要はない。むしろ、配線接続や、表示装置の封止を行う観点からは、表示領域外にマイクロカプセルが存在しない方が好ましい。表示領域外の領域は、配線の引き回しや封止材を設けるために利用されることが多いからである。
以下の実施形態はあくまで例示に過ぎず、本発明は本発明の趣旨の範囲で種々に変更可能なものである。
本発明の実施形態1は、電気泳動表示装置の製造に本発明の製造方法を適用した場合を例示するものである。
図1に示すように、表示装置20は、表示用電極102が設けられた基板101と、それに対向する対向電極302が設けられた基板301とが、液層40を狭持した形態をしている。液層40には、表示用流動体セル103が介在しており、各々のセル間が隔壁41で仕切られた形態で配置されている。
図2(a)に示すように、表示用電極102が設けられた基板101上に、隔壁形成用液体110を塗布して液層40を形成する。
図2(b)に示すように、以上の液層形成工程により、均一な厚みに隔壁形成用液体110からなる液層40が形成される。
図2(c)に示すように、上記のようにして形成した液層40に表示用流動体である懸濁液44を注入して液層中に介在させる。
懸濁液44としては、電気泳動表示液であればその種類を問わないが、液層40を構成する隔壁形成用液体110と実質的に混和しない材料である必要がある。懸濁液44の調整方法としてその一例を以下説明する。
液体吐出装置112としては、従来のインクジェット式記録ヘッドと同等の構造を有するものを利用可能である。液体吐出の構造として、例えばピエゾジェット方式、静電方式、加熱加圧式等種々の方法が利用可能である。インク液の代わりに、上記懸濁液を供給し、液体吐出装置112のノズルから適量を連続的に吐出させる。懸濁液44の液滴を吐出する領域は、基板101上の表示領域とする。
図2(d)に示すように、表示用流動体セル103が形成された液層40にエネルギーを供給して液層40を固化させる。この固化工程はオプショナルな工程であり、液層40が液層のまま溶媒蒸発や体積収縮をしないように構成できれば、不要な工程である。
以上により、表示装置としての基本構造が定まる。液層40が固化することにより、表示用流動体セル103の位置が固定され、互いのセルは隔壁41で仕切られることになる。
図3(a)に示すように、硬化させた液層40上に接着剤45を塗布し、ディスペンサ114により、予め対向電極302が一面に形成されている樹脂製等の基板301を貼り合わせる。
本発明の実施形態2は、カラー表示可能な電気泳動表示装置の製造に本発明の製造方法を適用した場合を例示するものである。以下の説明では、上記実施形態1との相違点を中心に説明することし、同様の部分についてはその説明を省略する。
図4(a)に示すように、基板101の上には、パターニングをすることによって、色調ごとに電気的に分離した表示用電極102a〜cを形成しておく。各表示用電極の幅は、例えば高精細度の表示装置であれば、幅1ミリメートル以下のパターンにする。このように微細なパターンであっても、本発明によれば、それぞれの色調に対応した電極上に、対応する色調で表示させるための表示用流動体セルを形成可能なのである。
本発明の実施形態3は、上記実施形態で製造される表示装置を含む電子機器の具体例に関する。
図5に、本発明の表示装置を駆動するための駆動手段を含めた電気泳動装置10のブロック図を示す。
図6Aは、大型テレビジョン装置のディスプレイ部分に本発明で製造される表示装置を適用した電子機器の例である。
図6Bは、電子ペーパ12の表示面に本発明で製造される表示装置を適用した電子機器の例である。
また、上記のような装置例の他、電界を印加可能に構成された壁面等の不動産に属するもの、車両、飛行体、船舶等の移動体に属するものにも適用可能である。
本発明は、上記実施形態に限定されることなく種々に変更して適用することが可能である。
Claims (9)
- 電極を有する基板上に隔壁形成用液体を塗布して液層を形成し、
該隔壁形成用液体と実質的に分離する表示用流動体を該液層の複数箇所に注入し、互いに分離された複数の該表示用流動体セルを形成することを特徴とする表示装置の製造方法。 - 表示用流動体を用いた表示装置の製造方法であって、
基板上に隔壁形成用液体を塗布して液層を形成するステップと、
該液層中で該隔壁形成用液体と分離しうる表示用流動体を該液層の複数箇所に介在させるステップと、を備えることにより、互いに分離された複数の表示用流動体セルを形成することを特徴とする表示装置の製造方法。 - 請求項1または2に記載の表示装置の製造方法において、
前記液層を形成する前記隔壁形成用液体を固化させるステップをさらに備える、表示装置の製造方法。 - 請求項1乃至3のいずれかに記載の表示装置の製造方法において、
前記表示用流動体は、液体吐出装置から吐出されるものである、表示装置の製造方法。 - 請求項1乃至4のいずれかに記載の表示装置の製造方法において、
種類の異なる前記表示用流動体が、前記液層の異なる箇所に設けられる、表示装置の製造方法。 - 請求項1乃至5のいずれかに記載の表示装置の製造方法において、
表示させる色調が異なる表示用流動体が、前記液層の異なる箇所に設けられる、表示装置の製造方法。 - 請求項1乃至6のいずれかに記載の表示装置の製造方法において、
前記表示用流動体として、少なくとも1種類以上の粒子を分散媒中に分散させた懸濁液を用いる、表示装置の製造方法。 - 請求項1乃至6のいずれかに記載の表示装置の製造方法において、
前記表示用流動体として、液晶材料を用いる、表示装置の製造方法。 - 請求項1乃至8のいずれかに記載の製造方法によって製造された表示装置を備える電子機器。
