Description
1.ラビングされた配向膜が生じる位相差
2.配向膜に吸着した分子が生じる位相差
一方、本表示素子では、これらの原因による光漏れは生じない。これは、以下の理由による。すなわち、上記の位相差は、たとえ存在していても、両配向膜近傍(両基板近傍)で生じる。そして、本表示素子では、配向膜8および9におけるラビング方向が偏光板6および7の吸収軸と直交または平行であるので、これらの両基板近傍で生じる位相差は、電界無印加時の透過率に寄与しない。
また、電極4および5はITOで構成されるものとしたが、これに限るものではなく、少なくとも一方が透明電極材料であればよい。
なお、ポリアミック酸やポリビニルアルコールを用いる場合には、基板上にこれらの材料を塗布して配向膜を形成した後にラビング処理を施せばよい。また、シランカップリング剤を用いる場合には、LB膜のように引き上げ法で作成すればよい。また、ポリビニルシンナメートを用いる場合には、基板上にポリビニルシンナメートを塗布した後、UV(紫外線)照射すればよい。

上記のように混合した液晶材料とモノマー等との混合系を、本実施形態にかかる表示素子のセルに注入した。上記のモノマー、重合開始剤を添加した混合系のTni(ネマチック−等方相相転移温度)は液晶単独の場合とほとんど同じ、すなわち113℃であった。そして、113℃よりも低い温度では誘電性物質層3はネマチック相状態を呈し、本実施形態では両基板の配向膜を互いに直交方向に配向処理を施しているので、一方の基板面から他方の基板面に向かって分子の配向方向が90度捩れたツイスト配向を示す。

Claims (15)
- 少なくとも一方が透明な一対の基板と、上記両基板間に挟持された物質層と、上記両基板の対向面にそれぞれ形成された配向膜とを備え、上記物質層に外場を印加することによって表示を行う表示素子であって、
上記物質層は、外場無印加時に光学的等方性を示し、外場を印加することによって光学的異方性を示す液晶性材料、または、外場無印加時に光学的異方性を示し、外場を印加することによって光学的等方性を示す液晶性材料を含み、
上記各基板における配向膜は、互いに直交する方向に配向処理が施されていることを特徴とする表示素子。 - 上記液晶性物質は、電界を印加することによって光学的異方性の程度が変化することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示素子。
- 上記各基板に、
互いの吸収軸方向が直交するとともに、
それぞれの吸収軸方向が、上記両配向膜における配向処理の方向と直交または平行となるように設けられた、偏光板を備えていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示素子。 - 上記配向膜は、有機薄膜からなることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示素子。
- 上記配向膜は、ポリイミドからなることを特徴とする請求項4に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質は、負の誘電異方性を有する棒状分子を含むことを特徴とする請求項2に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質は、ネガ型液晶性化合物を含有していることを特徴とする請求項2に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質に、カイラル剤が添加されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質は、カイラル物質であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質は、電界の2次に比例して屈折率が変化することを特徴とする請求項2に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質は、有極性分子を含有することを特徴とする請求項2に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質は、
外場無印加時に光学的等方性を示し、
外場を印加することによって光学的異方性が発現することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示素子。 - 上記液晶性物質は、
外場無印加時に光学的異方性を示し、
外場を印加することによって光学的異方性が消失して、光学的等方性を示すことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示素子。 - 上記液晶性物質を構成する分子は、
外場印加時もしくは外場無印加時に光学波長未満の秩序構造を有し、外場を印加することによって秩序構造が変化することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示素子。 - 請求項1〜14のいずれかに記載の表示素子を備えていることを特徴とする表示装置。
