従来より、排気浄化対策としてマフラーに触媒を装着することが広く採用されているが、このマフラーにより消音するとともに触媒によって排気ガスを浄化するためには、触媒全体に排気ガスを通過させることが要請される。

図2は従来例の内燃機関の触媒式排気装置を示す、この触媒式排気装置では、エンジンの排気管から導入される排気ガスは入口管1からマフラー内に入り、一部の排気ガスはそのまま入口管1の出口3から触媒4へ流入し、他の排気ガスは入口管1に設けられた小穴5を経て拡張室6内に入り、隔離壁7の排出口8を通過して触媒4へ至る。触媒4で浄化された排気ガスは、出口管9の上流側の小穴10から拡張室11に入り、出口管9の下流側の小穴12を経て出口管9の出口13から排出される。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
しかしながら、以上の構成を有する内燃機関の触媒式排気装置にあっては、触媒全体に排気ガスを流すために流路が複雑になり、排気抵抗が増加してエンジン出力が低下するおそれがある。このことから、マフラーを大型化して触媒を大きくし排気抵抗を減少させるこも考えられるが、このようにすると高価な触媒を多量に必要としてコスト高となる不具合があった。

この発明は以上の問題を解決するもので、その目的は、マフラーの排気抵抗を減少し、消音効果を増加するとともに、触媒全体に排気ガスが流れるようにして、排気ガスの浄化効率を向上させることができる内燃機関の触媒式排気装置を提供することにある。

【課題を解決するための手段】
前記目的を達成するために、この発明は、エンジンの排気管にマフラーを接続し、このマフラーに入口管および出口管を設け、内部を複数の隔壁により排気上流側から順に共鳴室、排気浄化用の触媒が装着された触媒収容室および消音室に区画してなる内燃機関の触媒式排気装置であって、前記触媒収容室に至る共鳴室の隔壁を略円錐形状として小径部に前記入口管を接続するとともに、該隔壁の大径部に接続して前記触媒収容室が設けられ、さらに該隔壁の傾斜部に小穴が設けられていて、前記触媒収容室と前記消音室とを区画するように下流側隔壁が設けられ、該下流側隔壁は、その中心部に前記出口管が接続されて該出口管の上流側一端を塞ぐとともに、該出口管の周囲に前記消音室の導入管が複数配置され、該導入管の上流側一端が前記下流側隔壁を介して前記触媒収納室に連通し、さらに前記消音室内には、前記導入管の下流側一端を塞ぐとともに、その中心部に前記出口管が挿通された支持板が設けられ、前記導入管には、前記下流側隔壁と前記支持板とで挟まれた領域に小穴が設けられ、かつ前記出口管には、前記下流側隔壁と前記支持板とで挟まれた領域に流入口が設けられていることを特徴とする。
また、請求項1に記載の内燃機関の触媒式排気装置において、前記出口管の管壁には、前記支持板と前記マフラーの下流側端面とで挟まれた領域に吸音口が設けられていることが好ましい。
また、請求項2に記載の内燃機関の触媒式排気装置において、前記吸音口の周囲には、吸音材が配設されていて、該吸音材はその外周の保持管で保持されていることが好ましい。

以上の構成の内燃機関の触媒式排気装置によれば、エンジンの排気管から入口管を経てマフラー内に導入された排気ガスは、円錐形状の隔離壁内を流れるので、排気抵抗が少なくしかも円錐形状内を排気ガスが広がって流れ触媒全体へ向かう。そして、触媒収容室の下流側の外周近傍に上記消音室の導入管を周囲に配置したので、触媒の外周面にも排気ガスが導かれやすくなる結果、触媒全面に排気ガスが満遍なく流れて浄化効率を向上させることができる。また、触媒収容室を通過した排気ガスは、導入管内に導入されてマフラーの消音室内に至る。この消音室内において、導入管内に導入された排ガスは、導入管に設けられた小穴を通過するとともに、出口管に設けられた流入口を通過して導入管内からその中心側に配置された出口管内に至り、さらにこの出口管内を通過してマフラー外に排出される。排ガスは、導入管の小穴及び出口管の流入口を通過する際に消音されるので、従来よりも優れた消音効果を奏することとなる。
また、出口管の管壁に吸音口が設けられている場合には、排ガスの騒音は吸音口によっても消音されるので、より優れた消音効果を奏する。
さらに、吸音口の周囲に吸音材が配設されていて、吸音材がその外周の保持管で保持されている場合には、排ガスの騒音は吸音口のみならず吸音材でも吸収されるので、よりいっそう優れた消音効果を奏する。

【発明の実施の形態】
以下、この発明の実施形態を好適な実施例により図面を用いて詳細に説明する。図1はこの発明の内燃機関の触媒式排気装置の組立断面図である。なお、同図には図2と独立に符号を付しており、両図において同一符号が同一箇所を示すものではない。同図において、図示しないエンジンの排気管に接続されたマフラー10は円筒状のケーシング11の両端が円盤12,13で閉鎖されており、円盤12にフランジ14を有する入口管15が設けられている。このケーシング11の内部は、上流側から順に、共鳴室16、触媒収容室17、および消音室18の三室に区画されている。これら共鳴室16、触媒収容室17、および消音室18は、隔壁19a,19bにより区画形成されている。触媒収容室17に至る共鳴室16内の隔壁19aは円錐形状となっており、隔壁19aの小径部20は入口管15に接続されて、傾斜部21には適宜に小穴22が設けられている。

以上のように構成された触媒式排気装置では、入口管15から導入された排気ガスは、共鳴室16で隔壁19aの傾斜部21に設けられた小穴22との間で消音されて円錐形状をなした隔壁19a内を広がって抵抗を受けることなく流れ、触媒27のほぼ全面に至る。隔壁19a内ではまだ中心部近くに多くの排気ガスが流れているが、触媒27の出口側の消音室18の導入管29が外周面の近傍に配設されているので、外周方向へ排気ガスが導かれて触媒27の全面に満遍なく流すことができる。また、消音室18内の流れは単純な流れを形成しているので、抵抗の増加を防ぎ拡張と吸音効果によって消音効果を得ることができる。

【発明の効果】
以上実施形態によって詳細に説明したように、この発明に係る内燃機関の触媒式排気装置は、入口管から導入された排気ガスが、共鳴室内の隔壁の傾斜部の小穴で消音されて円錐形状をなした隔壁を広がって抵抗を受けることなく流れ、触媒のほぼ全面に至る。さらに、触媒の出口側の消音室では、マフラー外周面の近傍に配置された導入管内に排気ガスが導かれるため、触媒の全面に排ガスを満遍なく流すことが可能となり、排ガスの浄化効率が向上する。また、消音室内の流れが単純な流れを形成するので、抵抗の増加を防ぐ効果がある。
