しかしながら従来の電子血圧計は1台にカフ1個具備という構成のため、個々人は自分の好みで決めた左右いずれか一方の腕または手首にカフを装着して血圧を測りそれでデータ取得を終了する傾向があり、続けて他方の腕または手首にカフを付け替えて測定することはほとんど行われていない。
このため例えば血栓などによって右半身と左半身の血圧バランスが崩れているような異常状態にあっても、自分の好みで決めた左右いずれか一方の測定値がたまたま標準値に収まっていれば血圧バランスが崩れている異常状態を見逃してしまうリスクがカフ1個を用いたこの測定手順には内在する。逆に言えばカフ1個の付け替え測定を実行することで右半身と左半身それぞれの血圧値がわかり左右の血圧バランス状態のチェックが初めて可能になるわけで、左右両方の血圧を測ることは肝要である。
ただしカフ1個を使い回すこの測定手順では左右の血圧測定を同じ時間帯に実行できないことから、その間の体調変化による血圧変動がそっくり測定誤差になるという問題点があるので、この誤差を実用レベル内に収める何らかの手段を講じなければならない。実際に健康体であっても血圧の最大値と最小値は僅かのきっかけで短時間に大きく変動する性質があり、カフの付け替え前後でこの変動を抑制することはなかなか困難である。
そこで右半身と左半身の血圧バランス状態を正しく知る手段としては同じ時間帯に左右同時に測ることが肝要で、そうすれば測定時間内の変動は左右双方の測定値に取り込まれるがこの変動分は左右測定値の差分を取れば相殺される。この実行にあたり従来は同一型式の電子血圧計を右半身用と左半身用に各1台用いた上でこの2台の血圧計の測定開始スイッチをほぼ同時に押す操作が必要であった。
