First, the configuration of the image forming apparatus according to the present invention will be described with reference to FIG.

FIG. 1 is a configuration diagram illustrating an outline of the image forming apparatus 100.

The developing machine 5 imparts toner to the electrostatic latent image on the photoconductor 1 formed by the exposure device 2 to form a toner image on the photoconductor 1.

The toner cartridge 6 includes a toner storage unit 13 that accumulates toner as an example of a developer, a toner transport member 7 that includes a transport auger that transports toner to the developing device 5, and toner that is stored in the toner storage unit 13. A customer replacement unit memory (CRUM) (15) that is a rewritable nonvolatile memory that stores the number of pixels of print data and the operation amount of the transport auger at the time of printing.

The control unit 11 performs overall control of the image forming apparatus 100 and makes various determinations regarding toner out of the toner cartridge 6.

Next, the peripheral configuration of the toner cartridge 6 will be described with reference to FIG.

FIG. 2 is a block diagram showing an outline of the peripheral configuration of the toner cartridge 6.

When printing is performed by the image forming apparatus 100, the toner accommodated in the toner accommodating portion 13 is conveyed to the developing device 5 by the toner conveying member 7. The toner conveying member 7 conveys the toner accommodated in the toner accommodating portion 13 to the developing device 5 by the rotation of a conveying auger having a spiral blade at the axis. The operation amount measuring unit 8 measures the driving time or rotation speed of the transport auger when the toner is transported. The toner conveying member 7 may be a film-like conveying film affixed to the shaft center or a belt-like toner conveying belt. In short, the toner conveying member 7 conveys toner toward the developing device 7. I just need it.

The CRUM (15) of the toner cartridge 6 stores the number of pixels of print data printed by the toner stored in the toner storage unit 13 and the operation amount of the transport auger, and prints using the toner stored in the toner storage unit 13. In this case, the total number of pixels in which the number of pixels of the printed print data is accumulated and the total amount of movement in which the amount of movement of the transport auger is accumulated are stored. In the storage process, the control unit 11 receives the total number of pixels and the total operation amount stored in the CRUM (15), and receives the number of pixels received from the pixel number calculation unit 10 and the operation received from the operation amount measurement unit 8. The total number of pixels is added to the total number of pixels to calculate a new total number of pixels, and the total amount of movement is added to the total amount of movement to calculate a new total amount of movement. Then, the value of the calculated total number of pixels and the total operation amount is written in the CRUM (15).

By such processing, the control unit 11 uses the total number of pixels of print data printed by the toner stored in the toner storage unit 13 of the toner cartridge 6 and the toner stored in the toner storage unit 13 of the toner cartridge 6. The total operation amount of the toner conveying member 7 when printing is performed is calculated.

Then, the control unit 11 determines the remaining amount of toner and the toner exhaustion based on the calculated total number of pixels and total operation amount and various threshold values stored in the memory 14.

Then, the result determined by the control unit 11 is displayed on the operation / display unit 12.

The determination of the remaining toner amount and the toner exhaustion in the control unit 11 is performed in three stages according to the amount of toner assumed to remain in the toner cartridge 6, and accompanying each determination. The displayed messages are “Toner is running low”, “Toner out warning”, and “Toner out”.

Next, a process in which printing is performed by the image forming apparatus 100 and a toner out check (including toner remaining amount determination and toner out determination) of the toner cartridge 6 is performed will be described with reference to FIG. .

FIG. 3 is a flowchart showing processing for checking whether the toner cartridge 6 is out of toner.

The control unit 11 of the image forming apparatus 100 uses the empty threshold (the empty threshold is “third” in the claims) in which the total operation amount calculated from the operation amount sent from the operation amount measuring unit 8 is stored in the memory 14 in advance. It is determined whether or not the threshold is exceeded (step 301).

Here, the empty threshold value to be compared is a value at which the toner cartridge becomes sufficiently empty when the total operation amount reaches that value.

If it is determined in step 301 that the total operation amount has exceeded the empty threshold value (YES in step 301), it is determined that the toner has run out sufficiently, and the operation / display unit 12 displays “toner out”. Is called.

If it is determined in step 301 that the total motion amount does not exceed the empty threshold (NO in step 301), the control unit 11 next calculates the total amount calculated from the motion amount sent from the motion amount measurement unit 8. It is determined whether or not the amount of movement exceeds the attention threshold value stored in advance in the memory 14 (the attention threshold value corresponds to the “first threshold value” in the claims) (step 302).

If it is determined in step 302 that the total motion amount has exceeded the attention threshold value (YES in step 302), then the control unit 11 determines that the total number of pixels calculated from the number of pixels sent from the pixel number calculation unit 10 is It is determined whether or not the pixel empty threshold value stored in advance in the memory 14 (the pixel empty threshold value corresponds to the “second threshold value” in the claims) has been exceeded (step 305).

If the total number of pixels exceeds the pixel empty threshold in step 305 (YES in step 305), the total drive time of the toner conveying member 7 did not exceed the empty threshold, but the total number of pixels of the printed image is pixel empty. Since the threshold value is exceeded, it is determined that the toner is sufficiently emptied, and “out of toner” is displayed on the operation / display unit 12.

If it is determined in step 305 that the total number of pixels has not exceeded the pixel empty threshold (NO in step 305), “notice out of toner” is displayed on the operation / display unit 12, and the toner is displayed to the user. There is a warning that the toner will run out soon.

If the total motion amount does not exceed the attention threshold value in step 302 (NO in step 302), the control unit 11 then calculates the total motion amount calculated from the motion amount sent from the motion amount measurement unit 8. Then, it is determined whether or not the semi-caution threshold value stored in advance in the memory 14 has been exceeded (step 303).

If it is determined in step 303 that the total operation amount has exceeded the semi-caution threshold (YES in step 303), the operation / display unit 12 displays “toner is low”, and the toner is displayed to the user. An alert is made to inform you that the amount of is decreasing.

As described above, the remaining amount of toner and the determination of running out of toner such as “toner run out”, “care of running out of toner”, and “toner is running low” are performed according to the operation amount of the toner conveying member 7 and the like.

If it is determined in step 303 that the total motion amount has exceeded the semi-caution threshold (NO in step 303), the toner-out check process is terminated.

As described above, since the toner out check is performed based not only on the operation amount of the toner conveying member 7 but also on the number of pixels of the printed image, as shown in FIG. Compared with the reference number 401), when the toner exhaustion check according to the present invention is performed (reference number 402), the variation in the remaining toner at the time of empty determination becomes a value close to the catalog specification, which is improved.

The image forming apparatus according to the present invention is not limited to an electrophotographic image forming apparatus, and can be applied to an inkjet image forming apparatus.

The ink jet type image forming apparatus to which the present invention is applied includes a developing device 5, a toner cartridge 6, a toner conveying member 7, an operation amount measuring unit 8, an image processing unit 9, and the number of pixels described with reference to FIG. The calculation unit 10, the control unit 11, the operation / display unit 12, the toner storage unit 13, the memory 14, and the CRUM (15) are the same as those in which functions limited to the electrophotographic method are replaced with functions that can be printed by the inkjet method. It has the same function as the configuration of
