Abstract
【解決手段】回路基板10と、該回路基板10に対向して配置される対向基板20と、回路基板10及び対向基板20間に挟持され、液晶分子を垂直配向させてなる液晶層58と、対向基板20の液晶層58側に塗布プロセスにより形成された垂直配向能を有する第1の配向膜22と、回路基板10の液晶層58側に真空プロセスにより形成されプレチルトを有する第2の配向膜11とを備えた。

Description
したがって、高品位の表示品質を有する液晶表示装置を低コストで製造できる。
本発明によれば、プレチルト角を81.0°〜86.5°の範囲とすることで横電界の影響が防止され、ディスクリネーションの発生を抑えつつ、高コントラスト特性を維持することができる。第2の配向膜の与えるプレチルト角が81.0°よりも小さい場合、非選択電圧印加(電圧OFF)時に液晶分子が必要以上にチルトしてしまい、コントラスト低下を招く。また、第2の配向膜の与えるプレチルト角が86.5°よりも大きい場合には選択電圧印加時に液晶分子の配向方向を規定することが困難であると思われる。
本発明によれば、表示品質が高品位で低コストで製造可能な電子機器を提供することができる。
以下に示す本実施形態の液晶装置は、スイッチング素子としてTFT(Thin-Film Transistor)素子を用いたアクティブマトリクス型の透過型液晶装置である。
第1の配向膜22の材料としては、ポリイミドの前躯体であるポリアミック酸、又はポリイミドが好適に用いられ、その側鎖に長鎖アルキル基や剛直な平面構造を有する官能基が導入されたものが用いられる。
第2の配向膜11の材料としては、SiO2もしくはSiOの珪素酸化物、またはAl2O3、ZnO、MgFもしくはITO等の金属酸化物が挙げられる。
図3は、画素電極間ギャップG及びセルギャップd(d1:2.0μm、d2:2.3μm、d3:2.5μm)におけるディスクリネーションの発生状況分布を示すグラフである。
ここでは、対向基板20側をプレチルトが発現しない略90°に限定した場合、回路基板10側のプレチルト角を変化させていき、プレチルト角とディスクリネーションの発生有無の関係を検討した。
また、対向基板20側の第1の配向膜22(垂直配向膜)を塗布プロセスを用いて形成することにより、高価な真空成膜装置の数を削減できるので大規模な設備投資をすることなく、従来の配向膜塗布装置で高い生産効率にて配向膜を形成することが可能である。その結果、表示品位の優れた垂直配向型ライトバルブを低コストで提供できるようになる。
回路基板10側に、斜方蒸着のような既知の手法により形成した第2の配向膜11によってプレチルトを付与する。本実施例の場合、蒸着源に対して基板をある角度θだけ傾斜させてセットし、SiO2を蒸着させた。この第2の配向膜11は、液晶分子52を基板面に対して82.0°に配向させる機能(プレチルト)を有する。
一方、対向基板20側には、共通電極21の表面にスピンコート法あるいはフレキソ印刷などの手法を用いて有機PI材を塗布し、第1の配向膜22を形成した。この第1の配向膜22は、液晶分子52を基板面に対して略90度に垂直配向させるものである。
上記実施の形態の液晶装置を備えた電子機器の例について説明する。
図4(a)は、携帯電話の一例を示した斜視図である。図4(a)において、符号500は携帯電話本体を示し、符号501は上記実施形態の液晶装置を用いた液晶表示部を示している。
Claims (3)
- 回路基板と、
該回路基板に対向して配置される対向基板と、
前記回路基板及び前記対向基板間に挟持され初期配向状態が垂直配向を呈する液晶層と、
前記対向基板の前記液晶層側に塗布プロセスにより形成された垂直配向能を有する第1の配向膜と、
前記回路基板の前記液晶層側に真空プロセスにより形成されプレチルトを有する第2の配向膜と、を備えたことを特徴とする液晶装置。 - 前記第2の配向膜のプレチルト角を81.0°〜86.5°の範囲内とすることを特徴とする請求項1記載の液晶装置。
- 請求項1乃至2のいずれか一項に記載の液晶装置を備えたことを特徴とする電子機器。
