Abstract
【解決手段】液晶表示装置の基板として、画素電極を有する基板と共通電極を有する基板を設け、それらの間に配向が設定された液晶層を有し、電圧無印加状態で前記液晶層内の液晶分子がほぼ垂直方向に配向している液晶表示装置において、各画素は1又は2以上のサブ画素からなり、前記共通電極上の各サブ画素に対応する部分に、それぞれ交差スリットを設け、共通電極上のスリットの方位は直線偏光板の吸収軸と同一方向又は±10度以内にする。

Description
また、図1(a)のように、画素電極上の画素の中心に突起又は画素電極に円形の開口部が設けることも提案されている。この場合、この突起又は画素電極の開口部により液晶を図1(a)に示す方向に配向させる。図1(a)の13,14に示されるように、一般的には、液晶は、突起又は画素電極の開口部を中心として放射状に配向する。すなわち、液晶の配向の方位角は、突起又は画素電極の開口部を中心に360度変化する。この場合の液晶の配向方位角の変化と透過率との関係をグラフに示したものが図6である。この際、偏光板の吸収軸は0度と90度の直交偏光板を使用すると、液晶の透過率は、液晶の配向方位角の変化に応じて、暗/明/暗/明/暗/明/暗/明の8領域が均等に生じることになる。図1(a)において、液晶の傾き13は明領域、液晶の傾き14は暗領域を示している。このように、透過率の低い暗領域が面積の半分の領域を占めてしまうため、全体の透過率が低下してしまう。

Claims (8)
- 画素電極を有する基板と共通電極を有する基板の間に設定された液晶層を有し、電圧無印加状態で前記液晶層内の液晶分子がほぼ垂直方向に配向している液晶表示装置において、
各画素は1又は2以上に分割されたサブ画素からなり、前記共通電極上の各サブ画素に対応する部分に、それぞれ交差スリットを設けられていることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記基板上には2枚の直線偏光板がそれぞれ設けられており、前記2枚の直線偏光板の一方の直線偏光板の吸収軸の方位は前記交差スリットの方位と同一方向またはその±10度以内であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記スリットの幅と前記基板間で構成されるセルギャップ(液晶層の厚さ)は、十字交錯部分を除いて、スリット幅/セルギャップの値が1.0〜3.0の範囲である請求項1又は2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記スリットの幅と前記基板間で構成されるセルギャップ(液晶層の厚さ)は、十字交錯部分を除いて、スリット幅/セルギャップの値が1.2〜2.5の範囲である請求項3に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記交差スリットは、前記サブ画素の各辺の中央を結ぶ位置に配置されている請求項1ないし4のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記交差スリットは、前記サブ画素の対角線上に配置されている請求項1ないし5のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
- 円偏光板が設置されている請求項1、3又は4に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 請求項1ないし7のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置を有する電子装置であって、携帯電話、パーソナルデジタルアシスタント(PDA)、ノートブックパソコン、カーナビゲーション(テレビ)、デジタルスティルカメラ(DSC)及び液晶表示装置からなる群より選ばれる電子装置。
