Abstract

An apparatus (10) for the classification of defects (14) in hides (12) must be indicated, which allows the automatic sorting, at an early tanning stage of the leather, of certain quality levels according to the defects, in order to avoid expensive tanning stages for inferior qualities, without depending for this decision on subjective visual checks which are difficult to reproduce. For this purpose, the leather (12), already split, subjected to a first tanning and well stretched, is dragged, with predefined feed, through an irradiation apparatus (23), where it is irradiated with a long wave infrared light blade on the grain side, i.e. crossed by the light on the flesh side, so as to record successive lines transverse to the direction (18) of progress of the shadow projection dependent on the defects, or of the attenuation of the passing light dependent on the defects and the structure, by electric or mechanical stroboscopic operation. An economic realization uses quartz lamps with thermal radiation, and consumer CCD cameras, the latter after removing the normally incorporated infrared filter, commonly available on the market. By means of an expert system, trained to recognize the various typical defects and integrated in a neuronal network, the defects (14), represented by intensity oscillations, are converted into an evaluation device (30), taking into account their size, position and number, in classification information (33), which, by means of a marker device (32), are marked on the skin (12) and can be used to control a sorting plant (34), for a classified sorting of the skin (12). (Figure 3).
