Il tutto per sgravare le strade dal traffico pesante e dall'inquinamento ambientale generato dall'unico mezzo terrestre che ha il vantaggio di effettuare il trasporto sorgente-destinazione senza la rottura di carico. E' noto un solo sistema per il trasporto di mezzi pesanti completi di motrice stradale: l'Autostrada Viaggiante che viene utilizzata tra l'Italia ed il nord Europa attraverso Svizzera ed Austria, altri sistemi necessitano di automatismi e attrezzature a terra e trasportano il semirimorchio disgiunto dalla motrice, ogni altro sistema prevede l'imbarco dei soli semirimorchi e necessita di sistemi di sollevamento. Le limitazioni del sistema Autostrada Viaggiante sono sintetizzati nell'impossibilità di effettuare scali intermedi e nelle limitazioni tecniche: carrelli con ruote troppo piccole, manutenzione gravosa e problemi nell'affrontare i deviatoi.
