Abstract

Method for accelerating the conversion of pig farm effluents into a product having fertilising properties, comprising a combination of the following operations: - mixing the pig farm effluent with an aqueous solution of compositions known in commerce by the names of Virkon, Virkon S and Virkon NF (Virkon no foam), used as disinfectants and containing the following components expressed as percentage parts by weight: (a) from 0.01 to 5 parts of a water-soluble inorganic halide, (b) from 25 to 60 parts of an oxidising agent which reacts with the halogen in aqueous solution in order to yield hypohalite ions, (c) from 3 to 8 parts of sulphamic acid, (d) from 0 to 20 parts of a non-reducing organic acid, (e) from 10 to 30 parts of an alkali metal hexametaphosphate anhydride, and - maintaining the contact time of not less than 1 hour, with or without stirring. The concentration of the aqueous solution of Virkon, Virkon S and Virkon NF may be between 0.1% and 20% by weight. The ratio by volume between the aqueous solution of Virkon, Virkon S or Virkon NF and effluent may lie between 10:1 and 1:10. Contact between the reagents may be maintained by continuous or discontinuous stirring, or by mixing by spraying the aqueous solution into the effluent.
