Abstract

When the feeding roll (5), arranged at the unwinding station (1), is near to depletion, a new full roll (105) is disposed between a pair of transfer arms (15) which are ready at a stand-by station, and the leading flap (205) of a paper web (105') from a new roll (105) is locked in a gripper device (51,54) arranged at the lower end of a pair of retractable arms (46) carried by a splicing carriage (40) which is movable on rails (39) from the stand-by station to the splicing station (2). Thereafter, the depleted roll (5) is transferred from the unwinding station (1) to a parking station (27), while the new roll (105) is transferred from the stand-by station to the unwinding station (2). Concurrently, the splicing carriage (40) is advanced from the stand-by station to the splicing station (31,34) bringing the leading flap (205) of the new paper web (105') to the splicing station. At the splicing station, the splicing carriage (40) attaches the leading flap (205) of the new web (105') to the trailing flap (5'') of the exhausted web (5'), and soon thereafter the trailing flap (5'') is severed from the core (4) of the depleted roll (5).
