Abstract

An extract from fruits of the palms of Serenoa and Subal species is prepared by using two extractions successively with different solvents. More specifically, the first solvent is acetone or methyl ethyl ketone and the second extraction is effected using ethyl acetate or chloroform. Suitable palms that may be used include Sabal serrulatum, Sabal palmetto, and Serenoa repens. The fruits are finely ground and mixed with 55-60% by volume of the ketonic solvent. The extract may be concentrated below 65 deg. C and is then purified by dissolution in 65-80% by volume of an ester or halogenated hydrocarbon solvent, and passage through a silica column. The eluate may be kept at 1-5 deg. C to precipitate possible unstable components. Filtering had evaporation in vacuo gives the desired extract.
