Abstract
The data reduction apparatus is used in a system where speech signals, e.g. between telephones, are digitised in a circuit and later reconverted. Successive blocks of digitised data, e.g. 16m seconds thereof, are compared with each other in the frequency domain in a comparator. The conversion is effected in a circuit block. If one block is similar to its predecessor within pre-set limits, that block is not sent to the output, and instead a control signal is passed to the communication link to instruct a store to repeat the previous block at the other end of the communication link. Thus only critical data blocks are transmitted and the data rate is reduced.
