Abstract

Compsns. for topical application to the eyes contain a sulphonamide as carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, the sulphonamide being pharmaceutically acceptable and having the following properties: (a) either a pKa baove 7.0 and below 7.3 or sufficient solubility inter to form an at least 3mM soln. at pH 8.2, but insufficient to form a 1% by wt. soln., (b) a sepn. coefft. with ether of at least 1.0; (c) a sepn. coeffnt. with chloroform of at least 0.01; (d) a dissociation constant with carbonic anhydrase not exceeding 3 x 10 to the 8th power molar; (e) a first order penetration constant across a live rabbit cornea of at least 0.005 per hour; (f) harmlessness to the cornea; (g) stability in soln. and in contact with the cornea.
