Abstract

A non-ionic citric acid deriv. has formula (I): (where R or R' or R" is a polyethoxylated-alkyl or -aryl or -alkylaryl gp., and the two remaining gps. are the same or different pref. >=4 C alkyl gps). Part. the polyethoxylated gp. is mainly linear and contains pref. >=7 ethoxy gps. and 10-16C atoms. The citric acid deriv. is used as a temporary softening agent for fabrics. It is easily dispersable in H2O, has excellent softening characteristics, and is chemically inert wrt electrolytes present in treatment solns.
