Abstract

The letter (16) or other article is gripped between two conveyor belts (14, 14'), parallel to each other with a gap between. The letter drops into a space between the belts of a Archimedean screw flight (10). This rotates and the letter passes along its length, guided by rods (13, 13') at the sides, to contact the surface of another belt conveyor (12). The letter is again gripped between parallel conveyors (15, 15'), similar to the incoming conveyor, and passed on for further processing. The rotational speed of the screw flight is adjustable, providing a variable time delay, and the conveyors are positioned at 90 deg. to the screw.
