Abstract
Cpds of formula (I): (where R=H or opt. branched alkyl) in the form of racemates, enantiomers, non-toxic salts and easily hydrolysed esters and cpds. of formula (II): (where Hal=Cl or Br) are new. (I) is prepd by reacting 6-APA with (II) in aprotic solvent in the presence of halohydrogen acceptors, pref. after protecting with hexamethyldisilazane. (II) is prepd by reacting alpha-halophenylacetic acid with RNH-NH2 to form a cpd (III): which is reacted with PCl5 or PBr5 to give (II). (I) have antibacterial and bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of Gram +ve and Gram -ve bacteria. They may be used in the treatment of bacterial infections.
