Abstract
Process for mfg. metallic, ceramic, and/or metal-ceramic sponges with a three-dimensional cellular fibrous structure, starting from plastic sponges with the same configuration which are metallised without altering that configuration. The metallised sponge is coated with metal and/or metal-ceramic materials by (a) a molten spray, (b) electroplating, (c) vacuum vapour deposition, or (d) reactive spraying and/or with ceramics using methods (a) and (d); or (e) chemical vapour deposition. The plastic sponge is pref. foamed polyurethane with is no >30 pores per 2.5 cm and the sponge is pref. is not >2.5 cm thick. Used for mfr. of catalysts for heterogeneous processes e.g. with a final coating of Pt, the sponge can be used in a catalytic after burner for motor vehicle exhaust gas. Catalysts can also be made for use in ammonia synthesis. The metal-ceramic may be >=1 cpd. of Cr and Ni used with Al2O3. The ceramic may also be Al2O3.
