Abstract
A Vee-shaped seal ring fits into the circular recess of a pneumatic cylinder piston in such a way that the axially opposite sides of the ring are in sealing contact with the two sides of the recess. The seal ring edge which points radially outwards is in sealing contact with the cylinder wall. The two circular faces which point towards the base of the piston recess are so shaped that they cannot form a seal. When the pressure fluid reaches one side of the seal, one flange of the seal is deflected inwards so that the fluid can enter the space between seal ring and recess base. Since the fluid is under pressure it expands the seal ring, thus increasing the contact pressure on the sealing faces.
