Abstract

A yarn feed device comprises a vertical hollow shaft at the top of which is mounted a roller having axially extending slots, and yarn is wound onto the lower end of the roller and is advanced axially along the roller by an advancing mechanism within the roller. At the top end of the roller the yarn passes through a number of inclined flexible fingers on the top end face of the roller and against which a hood is pressed, and after disengaging from the finters the yarn passes through the hollow shaft and is fed to a textile machine. The advancing mechanism comprises several piles of flexible plates mounted on the periphery of an annulus located within the roller each pile of plates projecting through an associated slot in the roller. The annulus is supported by a bearing around a sleeve which is rotatably mounted on the shaft, the annulus being eccentric with respect to the shaft, and the plane of the annulus being inclined to the transverse axis of the shaft, whereby as the shaft rotates the annulus rocks and the piles of plates advance the yarn windings on the roller from the lower end of the roller to the upper end. The tension on the yarn can be varied by adjusting the pressure of the hood on the fingers. When being advanced along the roller, the yarn windings are maintained sepd. by the plates thereby reducing yarn breakage.
