Claims (13)
1. A pneumatic tyre for vehicle wheels consisting of a tread and two sidewalls comprising lastomeric material extending from the tread and terminating in beads which, in use, seat on a rigid wheel rim, in which tyre the tread is wider axially than the tyre radially inwardly of the tread and is reinforced over substantially the whole of its width by an annual structure which is substantially inextensible when the tyre is inflated in both its circumferential and lateral directions and in which the sidewalls each have a cross-sectional shape whose midline, over substantially its whole length between the bead reinforcement and the bead, is convex with respect to the interior of the tyre, each said sidewall being such that it is constrained in compression between the tread reinforcement and the associated bead seat on the wheel rim on inflation of the tyre and under service conditions, said annular structure comprising at least two layers of parallel cords, the cords of each layer crossing those of the adjacent layer, the layers extending into the lateral portions of the tread to which the sidewalls are connected, and said annular structure further comprising, at each of said lateral portions, an additional reinforcing layer resistant to tension in the circumferential direction so as to increase the resistance of the annular structure to bending under the influence of radial stresses.
2. A pneumatic tyre according to claim 1 in which the annular reinforcing structure, at each of its lateral portions which joins the corresponding sidewall, comprises at least one additional element which is resistant to tension in the circumferential direction of the tyre.
3. A pneumatic tyre according to Claim 1 in which the annular reinforcing structure at each of said lateral portions is folded in such a way that the structure contains a greater number of layers in said lateral portions than in its central portion.
4. A pneumatic tyre according to Claim 2 in which the tension resistant elements are additional strips of cords.
5. A pneumatic tyre according to Claim 4 in which said additional strips of cords lie in a radially outer position with respect to said annular reinforcing structure.
6. A pneumatic tyre according to Claim 4 or 5 in which the cords of said additional strips lie at an angle with respect to the mid-circumferential plane of the tyre which is smaller than that formed with said. plane by the cords of said annular reinforcing structure.
7. A pneumatic tyre according to Claim 6 in which the cords of the additional strips are orientated in a direction parallel to the mid-circumferential plane of the tyre .
8. A pneumatic tyre according to any one. of Claims 4 to 7 in which the cords of the additional strips are made of a textile material.
9. A pneumatic tyre according to Claim 8 in which said textile material is rayon.
10. A pneumatic tyre according to any one of Claims 4 to 7 in which the cords of the additional strips are made of a metallic material.
11. A pneumatic tyre according to any one of Claims 2 and 4 to 10 in which the additional elements which are resistant to tension in the circumferential direction of the tyre are so positioned that the axial distance between their respective axially innermost edges is between 50% and 90% of the total axial width of the annular reinforcing structure.
12. A pneumatic tyre according to Claim 11 in which the axially outermost edges of said elements substantially coincide with the axially outermost edges of the annular reinforcing structure.
