Claims (11)
1. An electrochemical generator, comprising a supply of gas, a φ controllable source of high energy electrons, means for generating a controllable electric field, means for passing said gas in a stream through said field, and means for repeatedly irradiating the gas stream in said field with short bursts of said high energy electrons from said source, said controllable electric field generating means being operative after each electron burst to reduce said electric field by conduction through ionized gas produced by said electron burst until the next irradiation of said gas with said high energy electrons.
2. A generator according to claim 1, wherein said source of high energy electrons comprises an electron beam gun.
3. A generator according to claim 1, wherein said controllable electric field is generated by a capacitor charged by a direct voltage source, said capacitor being discharged in response to each irradiation of said gas with the high energy electrons.
4. ^ A generator according to claim 3 wherein the discharge path of said capacitor is through said gas, said gas being conductive when irradiated with the high energy electrons.
5. A generator according to claim 1, wherein said controllable electric field is generated by a direct voltage source comprising a capacitor, a charging network for charging said capacitor tc a predetermined voltage level, and a discharge path for said capacitor, said discharge path comprising said stream, the impedance of said stream becoming low when 433 03/2 irradiated with the high energy electrons.
6. , A generator according to claims wherein said stream is in a confined passage.
7. . A generator according to claim 6 wherein said passage is such as to provide a laminar flow of said stream.
8. . A generator according to claim 7 , wherein said gas supply is arranged to repeatedly interrupt the gas stream following each irradiation thereof.
9. I A generator according to claim 6 wherein an opposed cathode and anode are positioned across said stream for accelerating said electrons, said cathode being connected to one plate of said capacitor, said anode being connected to the other plate of said capacitor, said discharge path for said capacitor being between said cathode and anode.
10. . A generator according to claim 1 , wherein said gas is oxygen and ozone is generated as a result of the irradiat ing of said oxygen gas.
11. . A electrochemical generator, constructed and arranged substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing. - 10 -
