Claims (24)
1. A method of regulating the growth of plants, which comprises applying for uptake by the plants a compound of the formula: wherein Y is a furyl, halopyridyl or unsubstituted or (C^ _ ^alkyl)-, halo-, trifluororaethyl-cyano- or nitro-substituted phenyl group, and X is a hydrogen atom, a (hydroxy-, cyano- , carboxy- , alkoxycarbonyl- , carbamoyl or mono-or di-alkyl? carbamoy^-substituted (C^ _ -.alkyl) group or a -COOCH.^, COOC^H.., - COOCgH.. or group, optionally the compound being in the form of a salt when X is a hydrogen atom, in the form of a salt, ester, amide or nitrile when X is a carboxy- (C^ _ -. alkyl) group or in the form of an ester when X is a hydroxy- (C-^ _ ^ alkyl) group.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein Y is a 4-substituted phenyl group.
3. A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein Y is parachlorophenyl .
4. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein X is carboxymethyl .. 41552/2
5. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the compound applied is 5- (4-chlorophenyl) tetrazolyl-acetic acid or a salt, ester or amide thereof.
6. A method as claimed in claim 5 wherein the compound applied is the ethyl ester of 5- (4-chlorophenyl) tetrazolylacetic acid.
7. A method as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5 wherein the compound is applied for uptake by plant foliage.
8. A method as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6 wherein the compound is applied for uptake by plant roots.
9. A method as claimed in any of claims 1 to 8 wherein the compound is applied at a rate of from 0.01 to 10 kilograms per hectare.
10. A method as claimed in claim 9 wherein the compound is applied at a rate of from 0.1 to 2 kilograms per hectare .
11. A method as claimed in any of claims 1 to 10 wherein brussel sprouts are treated in an amount sufficient to kill the apices thereof but insufficient to damage substantially other parts of the plants. 41S52/2
12. A method as claimed in claim 11, wherein the compound is applied to Brussels sprouts plants between four and sixteen weeks before harvest.
13. A method as claimed in any of claims 1 to 10 wherein the compound is applied to fruit trees in an amount sufficient to inhibit apical growth and to encourage lateral growth.
14. A method as claimed in any of claims 1 to 10 in which the compound is applied to peas in an amount sufficient to reduce vegetative growth.
15. A method as claimed in any of claims 1 to 10, in which the compound is applied to sugar cane in an amount sufficient to stunt the growth thereof.
16. A method as claimed in any of claims 1 to 15 substantially as described, particularly with reference to any of examples 1, 2 and 8 to 13.
17. A composition suitable for use in the method claimed in any of claims 1 to 16 comprising a compound of the formula: 4I5S2/2 wherein Y is a furyl, halopyridyl or unsubstituted or (C^ _ ^ alkyl)-, halo-, trif1uorometh 1-cyano- or nitro-substituted phenyl group, and X is a hydrogen atom, a (hydroxy-, cyano-, carboxy-, alkoxycarbonyl-, carbamoyl or mono- or di-alkyl^ carbamoy^substituted (Cj^ 5 alkyl) group or a -COOCH3 , COOC2H , -COOC6H5 or group, optionally the compound being in the form of a salt when X is a hydrogen atom, in the form of a salt, ester, amide or nitrile when X us a carboxy- (C^ _ ^ alkyl) group or in the form of an ester when X is a hydroxy- (C^ _ ^ alkyl) group; in admixture with a carrier comprising a diluent and a surface active agent.
18. A composition as claimed in claim 17 wherein Y is a 4-substituted phenyl group.
19. A composition as claimed in either of claims 17 or 18, wherein the compound is ethyl 5- (4-chlorophenyl) -2-tetrazolyl cetate.
20. A composition as claimed in any of claims 17 to 19 containing from 10 to 85% by weight of the compound.
21. A composition as claimed in any of claims 17 to 20 containing from 0.01 to 10% by weight of the compound.
22. A composition as claimed in claim 21 containing from 0.1 to 1% by weight of the compound.
23. A composition as claimed in claim 17 substantially as described, particularly with reference to examples 14 to 17.
