Claims (14)
1. Web drying apparatus arranged pneumatically to dry (as herelnbefo e defined) a moving web (as hereinbefore defined) of porous damp material, said apparatus comprising an air distribution chamber through which in use the web to be dried passes and which is adapted to be maintained unde pressure, the said chamber having means for receiving a compressed gas, and web inlet and outlet slots disposed in the plane of the web and transversely to the intended direction of movement of said web, said slots having a thickness substantially equal to the thickness of the web to be treated, the web passing in use through these slots and the gas only escaping in use from the distribution chamber through these slots, or through these slots together with other slots also in the plane of the web.
2. Apparatus according to Claim 1, wherein the width of the slots substantially equals the width of the web to be dried*
3. Apparatus according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the width of at least one of the input and output slots is adjustable.
4. Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein grooves extending perpendicular to the direction of travel of the web are provided in at least one of the walls of the input and output slots.
5. » apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein further slots are provided at the lateral ends of the distribution chamber, said further slots having lips between which the lateral margins of the web to be dried can move longitudinally.
6. Apparatus according to Claim 3, having means for detecting the position of at least one of the lateral margins of the web.
7. Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the width of the distribution chamber is shorter than the width of the eb to be dried.
8. · Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims* wherein the distribution chamber is defined by two elements at least one of which is mobile and adjustable relative to the other*
9. Apparatus according to Claim 3, wherein the mobile element is made of a flexible material and is locally deformable.
10. Apparatus according to Claim 8, comprising means for producing a balancing force applied to the mobile element.
11. Apparatus according to Claim 10, comprising means for regulating said balancing force as a function of the pressure in the distribution chamber.
12. Apparatus according to Claim 8, wherein said mobile element is provided with an auxiliary air chamber therein adapted to be connected to a compressed air supply device, whereby the air pressure in said auxiliary chamber produces said balancing force.
13. Apparatus according to Claim 12, wherein there are a plurality of apertures providing air communication between said auxiliary chamber and said distribution chamber.
14. Apparatus for pneumatically drying a moving web of porous damp material substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings. For the Applicants
