Abstract
1388605 Phosphorus-containing condensation polymers CIBA-GEIGY AG 5 Sept 1972 [10 Sept 1971] 41096/72 Heading C3R [Also in Division D1] Condensation products are obtained by condensing 1 mol. of a tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)- phosphonium compound with 0 02 to 0 5 mol. of cyanamide at 40 to 120 C., optionally in the presence of formaldehyde or a formaldehydedonating agent and optionally in an inert organic solvent. The condensation optionally may be continued at 100 to 150 C. and free hydroxyl groups may be etherified. Organic fibre materials may be flameproofed by applying to them aqueous compositions of the condensation products together with polyfunctional epoxides or nitrogen compounds, and curing by heating the materials either when dry or while still moist or by contacting them with ammonia. In examples condensation products are obtained by reacting tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium chloride and hydroxide with cyanamide; in one instance the product is etherified with methanol and in another formaldehyde is included in the condensation; fabrics of polyester-cotton, polyester, cotton and wool are flameproofed by applying to them aqueous compositions containing the condensation products together with dimethylolmelamine and trimethylolmelamine-dimethyl-ether, the compositions being cured by drying and heating the fabrics, by heating them while moist and by contacting them with ammonia.

Claims (2)
1. WHAT ¥E CLAIM IS: 1. Process for the manufacture of water-soluble condensation products from hydroxyme hyl-phosphonium compounds and cyanamide, characterised in that 1 mol of a tetrak±s-(hydroxy-methyl)-phosphonium compound is condensed with 0.02 to 0.5 mol of cyanamide at 40 to 120°0, optionally in the presence of formaldehyde or a formaldehyde-donating agent and optionally in the presence of an inert organic solvent and optionally subsequently further condensed at temperatures of 100 up to 150°c and, if appropriate, free hydroxyl groups are at least partially etherified with at least one alkanol with 1 to 4-carbon atoms.
2. Process according to Claim 1, characterised in that the condensation is carried out at 70 to 110°C · 3. Process according to Claim 1 or 2 , characterised in that the condensation is carried out in the presence of at-least one inert aromatic hydrocarbon as the solvent* * ·. ' ;.. 4. Process according to Claim 3, characterised in that at least one xylene is used as the solvent. 5. Process according to one of Claims 1 to 4, characterised in that the two starting materials are condensed with one another in a molar ratio of 1:0.1 to 1:0.3· 6. Process according to one of Claims 1 to 5, character- r ised in that a tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium salt or tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium hydroxide is used. 7. Process according to Claim 6, characterised in that' a tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium salt is used. 8. Process according to Claim 7, characterised in that a 40234/2 tetrakis-(hydrox methyl)-phosphonium halide is used. 9. Process according to Claim 8. characterised in that a tetrakis- (hydroxymethyl-)-phosphoni- in- chioride-is - used * 10. Process according to one of Claims 1 to 9, characterised in that etherification is carried out v/ith methanol. 11. Process according to one of Claims 1 to 10, characterised in that after completion of- the reaction the salts of the condensation products are converted into the corresponding hydroxides, 12. The condensation products obtainable according to the process of one of Claims 1 to 11. 13. Process for flameproofing organic fibre materials, characterised in that these materials are treated with an aqueous preparation which contains at least (1) a water-soluble condensation product of a hydroxymethyl-phosphonium compound and cyanamide, which is obtained by condensing 1 mol of a tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium compound with 0.02 to 0.5 mol of cyanamide at 40 to 120°C, optionally in the presence of formaldehyde or a formaldehyde-donating agent and optionally in the presence of an inert organic solvent, and optionally subsequently further condensing at temperatures of 100 to 150°C, and, if appropriate, etherifying free hydro yl groups at least partially v/ith at least one alkanol with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and (2) a polyfunctional epoxide having at least two epoxide groups which is derived from polyh dric phenols, a polyalkylenepolyamine , an aminoplast-forming agent or an aminoplast precondensate, and tha the materials treated in this way are finished by the thermofixing, moist batch, wet batch or ammonia fixing process. the treated materials are dried and subjected to a heat treatment. 15. Process according to Claim 1 , characterised in that in the manufacture of the component (1) the condensation is carried out at 70 to 110°C. 16. Process according to Claim 14 or 15, characterised in that in the manufacture of the component (1) the condensation is carried out in the presence of at least one inert aromatic hydrocarbon as the solvent. 17. Process according to Claim 16, characterised in that in the manufacture of the component (l) at least one xylene is used as the solvent. 18. Process according to one of Claims 14 to 17, characterised in that in the manufacture of the component (1) the two starting materials are condensed with one another in a molar ratio of 1:0.1 to 1:0,3* 19. Process according to one of Claims 14 to 18, characterised in that in the manufacture of the component (1) a tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium salt or tetrakis-(hydroxy-methyl) -phosphonium hydroxide is used. 20. Process according to Claim 19, characterised in that in the manufacture of the component (l) a tetrakis-(hydroxy- .· methyl) -phospho.nium salt is used, 21. Process according to Claim 20, characterised in that in the manufacture of the component (1) a tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium halide is used.. 22. Process according to Claim 21, characterised in that in the manufacture of the component (l) tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium chloride is used. 40234/2 23. Process according to one of Claims 14 to 22, characterised in that in the manufacture of the component (1) etheri-fication' is -carried" out "v/ith" methanol. 24. Process according to one of Claims 14 to 23, characterised in that in the manufacture of the component (1) the salts of the condensation products are converted, after completion of the reaction, into the corresponding hydroxides. 25. Process according to Claim 14, characterised in that a methylolurea or a methylolmelamine is used as the component (2). 26. Process according to one of Claims 14 to 25, characterised in that fibre material of polyamides, cellulose, cellulose-poD.yester or polyester is flameproofed . 27. Process according to Claim 26, characterised in that fabrics of wool or polyester or mixed fabrics of polyester-cellulose are rendered flameproof. 28. Process according to one of Claims 13 to 27, characterised in that the fibre material is dried at temperatures of up to 100°C and is subjected to a heat treatment above 100°C. 29. The organic fibre materials provided wit a flameproof finish by the process according to one of Clams 13 to 28. 30.
