Abstract
1397741 Metal oxide coatings GLAVERBEL 22 June 1972 [8 July 1971] 29382/72 Headings C1A and C1N [Also in Division C2] A metal oxide coating is formed on a substrate by applying to the substrate a solution containing a metal acetyl acetonate of a mixture of metal acetyl acetonates in an aprotic solvent of dielectric constant greater than 15 and of dipolar moment greater than 3 Debye units, a substituted or unsubstituted monocarboxylic acid solvent, an amine or diamine solvent, or a mixture of two or more solvents selected from solvents of those classes, the oxide being formed in situ by heating. A large number of metal oxides are exemplified. The heat required may be supplied by pre-heating the substrate and the solution may be applied in droplet form. The coating may be formed on glass such as glass sheet during its manufacture or in the annealing lehr, or, generally, on substrates which are at least partly vitreous. Specified oxides are those of Fe, Ni, Co, Zn, V, Mn, Cu, In, Al, Ti, Zr, Th, Cr, Mg, Bi, Y, W and Ce and their mixtures. Specified solvents are dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, tetramethylurea, dimethylsulphoxide, acetonitrile, nitrobenzene, ethylene carbonate, tetramethylenesulphone, hexamethylphosphoramide, acetic acid, butyric acid, acrylic acid, thioglycolic acid, formic acid, ethylenediamine, propylenediamine, butylamine, and propylamine. The process of Specification 1,397,742 is disclaimed.

Claims (4)
1. ,39865/2 WHAT IS CLAIMED IS: 1. A process for forming a metal oxide coating on a substrate wherein a solution of at least one metal compound in an organic solvent is applied to the substrate and said compound is converted in situ by heating to leave a coating of at least one metal oxide, characterised in that the solution used for coating the substrate is a solution of a metal acetyl acetonate or a mixture of metal acetyl acetonates in an aprotonic solvent having a dielectric constant greater than 15 and a dipolar moment greater than 3 D, a substituted or unsubstituted monocarboxylic acid solvent, en amine or diamine solvent, or a mixture of two or more solvents selected from solvents of those classes.
2. A process according to Claim 1, characterised in that the substrate is pre-heated to a sufficiently high temperature to provide the heat required to effect said conversion of the metal compound or compounds .
3. A process according to Claim 2, characterised in that the substrate is pre-heated to bring the temperature of the surface to be coated to a value within the range 300° to 700°C.

A process according to any preceding Claim, characterised in that the solution is applied in droplet form. 6» A process according to Claim characterised in that dimet ylforraanide is used as a solvent, A process according to Claim characterised in that an aprotonic solvent specifically identified herein as such, other than dimethylformamide , is used. 7. a. A process according to any preceding Claim, characterised in that a substituted or unsubstituted mono-carboxylic acid solvent specifically identified herein as such, is used. 8. 9·· A process according to any preceding Claim, characterised in that the solvent used comprises an alkyl or alkylene amine or diamine in which the amino group or groups is ■ or are unsubstituted. 9. Q I/O.. A process according to Claim y , characterised in that an alkyl or alkylene amine or diamine solvent specifically identified herein as euch, is used. 10. -LL. A process according to any preceding Claim, characterised in that the solution applied to the substrate comprises a solution of an acetyl acetonate of a metal selected from the group: Fe , Ni , Co, Zn, V, Mn, Cu, In, Al , Ti , Zr , Th, Cr , or a mixture of acetyl acetonates of two or more metals of such group. 11. q !Π . A process according to any of Claims 1 to £0, characterised in that the solution applied to the substra comprises a solution of an acetyl acetonate of a metal selected from the group: g, Bi , Y, ¥ and Ce , or a mixture of acetyl acetonates of two or more metals of such group. 3¾. 12. A process according to any preceding Claim, characterised in that said solution is applied to a substrate which is at least partly vitreous. f 1*5r..' A process according to Claim 12 characterised in that said solution is applied so as to form a light-transmitting metal oxide coating. A process according to Claim _έ, characterised in that the formed metal oxide coating has a thickness in the range to X. A process according to any preceding Claim, characterised in that said substrate is flat glass which is in course of being manufactured as a continuous ribbon. 16. 15 ±7. A process according to Claim lo , characterised in that said solution is applied to the glass ribbon at a zone where its temperature is in the range to °C. A process according to any preceding Claim, characterised in that the solution applied to the substrate contains no water or contains distilled water in a proportion of not more than 10% by volume. A process according to Claim and substantially according to any of the Examples herein.
