FIRE STOP COLLARS FOR COMBUSTIBLE PIPES.

This invention relates to fire stop collars for combustible pipes or similar articles, such as conduits or trunking for cables, hereinafter in the specification and claims referred to simply as pipes. The pipes are of, for example plastics material such as poly-vinylchloride (PVC), and are used in building services. Such collars, each comprising intumescent material held in a restraining metal jacket, have been provided heretofore.
Each collar is for use to surround a pipe on the entry or exit of the pipe through a fire resistant structure such as a solid wall, floor or ceiling wherein a hole has been created for the passage of the pipe, and where, should a fire occur and the pipe partially or wholly disintegrate by deforming, melting or burning, an opening will be created through which smoke, fumes or fire could pass through the structure into an otherwise smoke-, fume- or fireproof area. A jacket of an existing collar and plugs the hole left by the partial or full disintegration of the pipe. The existing collars have disadvantages in that they are of rigid metal material requiring expensive tooling, and they are made to fit around specific diametered pipes.
Not all pipes used in building services are to these specific sizes, nor are the holes always made in the structures where easy access or room is available around the pipes to accommodate such collars. These collars are therefore not readily altered to meet particular on-site requirements. Due to the material of which the jackets are made, anti-corrosion protection has to be provided. The manufacturing process of such collars tends therefore to be expensive.
An object of the present invention is to provide a collar which obviates or mitigates these disadvantages.
Accordingly, the present invention is a fire stop collar for a pipe, the collar being formed from a web of sheet material arranged into a tube on the inside of which is secured a series of laterally spaced bricks of intumescent material, means to direct inwardly expansion of the bricks on heat expanding them, and attachment means to allow the collar to be secured to a surface around a hole through which the pipe passes.
Preferably, the web is of netted material. The netted material is desirably expanded metal. The web may 2θ alternatively be perforated sheet material.
Means are preferably provided on the web to secure the bricks to the web. The securing means are preferably top and bottom extensions of the web, the extensions each having inwardly directed opposing flanges extending parallel to the web.
The directing means desirably includes a lining provided between the bricks and the inside of the web. The lining is desirably of ceramic paper.
Preferably also, the attachment means are brackets secured to one end of the tubular web.
Preferably further, the diameter of a collar can be increased by one or more extension panels being secured to the web.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:Fig. 1 is a plan view of a collar according to the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view along the line II-II of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a web for a collar;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a collar being formed around a pipe;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the collar formed around the pipe and secured to a structure; and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a collar being increased in diameter by an extension panel being secured to the web.
Referring to the drawings, a fire stop collar is formed from a web 10 of netted material arranged into a tube on a pre-formed basis or on an in-situ basis. The web 10 is of expanded metal coated with either paint or
Η given a plastic powder coating.
A series of, in this embodiment ten, laterally spaced bricks 12 of intumescent material is secured on the inside face of the tubular web 10. The diameter of collar required to fit around a pipe determines the length of web 10 and the number of bricks 12 used in a collar.
Means are provided on the web 10 to secure the bricks 12 to the web 10. The securing means are top and bottom lateral extensions 14, 16 of the web 10. The extensions 14, 16 have inwardly directed opposing flanges 18 extending parallel to the web 10. The web 10 is shown in plan in Fig. 3 prior to the extensions 14, and flanges 18 being folded. A lateral connecting flap 10A is provided on one lateral side of the web 10.
Means are provided to direct inwardly expansion of the bricks 12, on heat expanding them, to close of an opening left by partial or full disintegration of a pipe 8 around which the collar is fitted. The directing means is a lining 20 of, for example ceramic paper, provided 20 between the bricks 12 and the inside of the web 10. If required, the lining 20 can also be provided between the bricks and the extensions 14, 16 and/or the flanges
18.
Attachment means are provided to allow the collar 25to be secured to a surface around a hole in the wall, floor or ceiling through which the pipe passes. The attachment means are apertured brackets 22 secured to one end of the tubular web 10. »
In use, a web 10 cut to a desired length is formed into a tube of required diameter in-situ around a pipe with the bricks 12 facing inwardly and the outer ends secured together at 24 with connecting flap 1OA overlying the back of the other lateral side of the web 10 as shown. The web 10 is then secured by fastenings passed through apertures 26 in the brackets 22 to a wall, floor or ceiling. On heat reaching the pipe which may burn, melt or otherwise disintregate partially or fully, an opening is formed into which the intumescent material expands to close off and thereby prevent fire, smoke or fumes passing through the hole. The web 10, extensions 14, 16 and the lining 20 prevent the intumescent material expanding in a direction other than inwardly apart from laterally from brick to brick to close off the gaps between the bricks 12. Triangular shaped extensions 28 are shown in Fig. 3 between each extension 14, 16. These are folded over at right angles and lined and serve to prevent expansion of the intumescent material out through the substantially triangular shaped gaps left between adjacent extensions 14, 16 when formed around a pipe 8.
In a modification as shown in Fig. 6, extension panels 30 are provided to increase the diameter of the collar. Each panel 30 comprises a brick 12 of intumescent material held on a backing web 32 of netted material by flanges 34 of extensions 36, 38. Each panel 30 has a lateral connecting flap 40 to overlie and be secured to the web 10 with the flap 10A of the web 10 overlying and being secured to the back of the extension panel 30. These extension panels 30 are used as required to increase the diameter of the collar if, for example the collar is to be fitted around a joint of two lengths of pipe which inadvertently is positioned adjacent to the hole in the wall, floor or ceiling.
The web 10 may be of perforated sheet material.
Variations and modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention as described above.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my invention, and the manner in which the same is to be performed,
Claims (12)
1. Λ fire stop collar for a pipe, the collar being formed from a web of sheet material arranged into a tube on the inside of which is secured a series of laterally spaced bricks of intumescent material, means to direct 05 inwardly expansion of the bricks on heat expanding them, and attachment means to allow the collar to be secured to a surface around a hole through which the pipe passes.

4. A collar as claimed in Claim 2, wherein the web is of perforated sheet material.
5. A collar as claimed In Claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, wherein means are provided on the web to secure the bricks to the web.
6. A collar as claimed in Claim 5, wherein the securing means are top and bottom extensions of the web.
7. A collar as claimed in Claim 6, wherein the extensions each have inwardly directed opposing flanges extending parallel to the web.
8. A collar as claimed in Claim 6 or 7, wherein the directing means includes a lining provided between the bricks and the inside of the web.
9. A collar as claimed in Claim 8, wherein the lining is of ceramic paper.
10. A collar as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the attachment means are brackets secured to one end of the tubular web.
11. A collar as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein one or more extension panels are provided to be secured to the web to increase the diameter of a collar.
12. A collar substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
