Abstract
1474377 Naphthalene derivatives BEECHAM GROUP Ltd 20 Aug 1974 [11 Sept 1973] 42550/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] Novel compounds II in which X is Cl, Br, OCH 3 , SCH 3 , or 1-4C alkyl; Y is -CHR 1 -CH 2 - or R 1 is H or CH 3 and A is -CO- or -CHOH-; excepting the known compound 4-(61-methoxy- 21-naphthyl)butan-2-one; are prepared by methylation of a compound VI with MeLi, followed where necessary by reduction of the -CO- group to a -CHOH- group or by base catalysed reaction of acetone with a compound VII to give a compound II where Y is -CH = CH- followed where necessary by reduction of the -CO- group to a -CHOH- group. 3 - (6<SP>1</SP> - Methoxy - 2<SP>1</SP> - naphthyl) - butyric acid is prepared by reaction of triethylphosphonoacetate with 2-acetyl-6-methoxynaphthalene to give ethyl 3-(6<SP>1</SP>-methoxy-2<SP>1</SP>-naphthyl)-2-butenoate; reduction of this with H 2 over Pd/C to give ethyl 3 - (6<SP>1</SP> - methoxy - 2<SP>1</SP> - naphthyl) - butyrate and hydrolysis with NaOH. Trans - 3 - (6<SP>1</SP> - methoxy - 2<SP>1</SP> - naphthyl) - 2- butenoic acid is prepared by hydrolysis of its ethyl ester with NaOH.
