Abstract
1463056 Metal-vapour lamps THORN LIGHTING Ltd 18 Jan 1974 [19 Jan 1973] 2953/73 Heading H1D [Also in Division C1] At least those portions of the internal surface of the discharge envelope or the exposed surfaces of internal components which tend to react with the gas filling of a discharge lamp are provided with a glassy coating of a metal phosphate or arsenate, the coating being deposited from a solution on heating. In an example, to a solution of anhydrous aluminium chloride in methanol is added orthophosphoric acid. The resulting liquid is injected through the exhaust tube into a discharge lamp, Fig. 1 (not shown), having a vitreous fused silica arc tube, distributed, and the surplus drained off. The resultant coating is baked at 100 C. in a vacuum for 1 hour and finally formed by baking at 400 C. for 3 minutes. Preferred phosphates and arsenates are those of aluminium, iron, chromium, titanium, vanadium and tin, but metals of atomic numbers 12, 14, 20, 21, 25, 27-32, 39-49, 56-80, 90 or 92 may be used. The term "phosphate" includes ortho-, meta-, and pyro-phosphates, together with phosphinates and phosphonates.
