Abstract

Title cpd. (I), useful as a low calorie sweetening agent, a medicament for chromic constipation and liver disorders and a diagnostic agent for determining kidney clearance, is prepd. by aerobic fermentation of sucrose to give isomaltose (II) which is subjected to catalytic hydrogenation in one stage. Thus sucrose is fermented aerobically with Protaminobacter rubrum to give (II) with some fructose and glucose, the latter are removed by fermentation with Saccharomyces cervisiae, then (II) is hydrogenated with Raney Ni to give (I).
