Abstract
1414671 Rendering plastics surfaces hydrophilic NUNC AS 5 Jan 1973 [14 Jan 1972 14 Aug 1972] 1818/72 and 37885/72 Headings C3P and C3R The surface of an article made from polystyrene, a polyamide or a polycarbonate is rendered hydrophilic by treating said surface with a liquid or gaseous medium containing oxygen and water, while subjecting the medium to ultra-violet irradiation. In a preferred procedure, the article is sprayed with water and introduced into a stream of water-saturated air or a water-saturated O 2 /SO 2 mixture, the article and the gaseous stream being simultaneously irradiated with ultra-violet light. The wavelength of the radiation used is preferably close to that of the absorption maximum of the plastics material of the article. The article may take the form of a dish or plate.
