Abstract

1371080 Packaging foodstuffs UNILEVER Ltd 10 Dec 1971 [15 Dec 1970] 57384/71 Heading B8C A package 48 comprises goods enclosed in heatscalable flexible sheet material 32 having a longitudinal heat seal 50 and transverse end seals 44, 46 in which edge zones 52, 54 of the sheet material 32 carry a surface treatment and the longitudinal seam is located inwardly of the edge zones which provide outwardly extending gripping fins for use as an opening device. As shown, the sheet material 32 is fed over a shoulder 22 into a tube former (20) to form a tube 40 around a filler tube 18 for a plastics foodstuff. The tube is displaced via a longitudinal heat sealer 34 to a transverse heat sealer 42, the pouch so formed is filled, and displaced to permit formation of a second transverse seal 46 and severance from the tube 40. The surface treatment of the edge zones 52, 54 is in the form of printed matter at opposite surfaces of the sheet 32, which prevents adherence during formation of the seals 44, 46.
