Abstract

1359462 Lubricating contacting interior surfaces of a tyre on deflation DUNLOP HOLDINGSLtd 9 June 1971 [20 June 1970] 30028/70 Heading B7C [Also in Division Fl] A deflated tyre and wheel assembly, which comprises a tyre, e.g. with an aspect ratio of between 30% and 75%, whose tread width is greater than the distance between tyre bead retaining flanges on the wheel rim, and means to prevent the tyre from being dislodged from the rim, e.g. a bead spacer ring or studs on the rim and/or no well in the rim, is treated to permit the assembly to be run with the tyre deflated by injecting lubricant under pressure into the tyre interior to lubricate contacting interior surfaces of the deflated tyre and thereby prevent tyre destruction due to frictionally generated heat. The lubricant may be injected by forcing a nozzle, e.g. 6, with a sharpened closed end and an orifice adjacent the closed end, either through a rupturable plug 20, e.g. or rubber of plastics, located in the wheel rim as shown in Fig. 4 or in the tyre, or directly through a tyre sidewall, the nozzle forming part of a hand operable syringe 1, Fig. 1, or being connected through a valve (16) to a container (15) of pressurized lubricant (Fig. 3, not shown). The plug 20 may be such as to reseal after it has been perforated, and may have a removable protective cap. Alternatively the lubricant may be injected through the tyre inflation valve using the apparatus shown in Fig. 2 which comprises a tube 14 adapted for connection to the valve and connected to a cylinder 2 containing lubricant which can be urged out of the cylinder by screwing a cradle 10 firmly on to a seating 12 on the cylinder 2 so as to cause a pin 13 to piece a pressurized cylinder 11 and displace a piston 3. The lubricant injection apparatus may be adapted to leave a marker in the assembly to show that lubricant has been used. The lubricant may be a liquid as described in Specification 1,359,467 or a solid, e.g. graphite or French chalk. Specifications 1,359,463, 1,359,464 and 1,359,465 are also referred to. [GB1359462A]
