1306546 Explosive compositions EXPLOSIVES & CHEMICAL PRODUCTS Ltd 21 May 1971 [9 June 1970] 27974/70 Heading C1D A blasting explosive composition comprises a water-soluble inorganic oxygen-releasable salt, a water-insoluble hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon, water, a surfactant, and a sensitizer; the surfactant is present in an amount sufficient to impart a grease-like consistency to the composition in the absence of a thickening agent. The inorganic salt may be ammonium nitrate mixed with nitrate of Na, K, Li, Ca, Ba, or Mg. Hydrocarbon and halogenated hydrocarbon fuels specified are diesel oil, lubricating oil, pentane, heptane, gasoline, kerosene, liquid paraffin, toluene, xylene, naphthalene, and trichloroethylene. Suitable surfactants are condensation products of oleyl-cetyl alcohol with ethylene oxide, oleamide, sorbitan monooleate, N-lauryl-γ-hydroxybutyramide, laurylamine acetate, secondary alkyl sulphates, and alkyl benzene sulphonates. The sensitizer may take the form of gas bubbles produced by reaction of H 2 O 2 with a catalyst, or of CaCO 3 or NaNO 2 with nitric acid; alternatively the sensitizer may be hollow silicate or resin spheres, foamed polystyrene, Al, Mg, B, Si, S, charcoal, coal, anthracite, gilsonite, T.N.T., or a mixture of T.N.T. and R.D.X. Solid ammonium nitrate may be dispersed in the grease together with additional fuel material. Other optional ingredients are bentonite, china clay, kieselguhr, and urea. [GB1306546A]
